-What's up? Brian Tong here, and welcome to the Apple Byte for all the good and bad inside the world of Apple. We missed yah, and I'm back from CES 2011. The Verizon iPhone is official and we have a hands-on with the iOS 4.3 beta, so let's get to the show. And, after four years of pent-up frustration and pretty much being teased over and over like that girl from a high school Spanish class would do, the Verizon iPhone Quadtro is here. That will be available on February 10th or February 3rd for pre-order for existing Verizon subscribers. The 16-gig model will cost 199, just like AT&T's. This is not a 4G LTE phone, but there's still a few differences. The hottest feature is being able to use it as a mobile hotspot to connect up to five devices with rumblings that AT&T might eventually get the feature as well. The antenna housing has been re-designed, so there are now four sims, two on the bottom sides and two on the top sides which, according to early hands-on, have shown no signs have been affected by the death grip. You won't be able to use voice and data together because Verizon CDMA network, currently, doesn't support it, but the most important feature of all, you can make calls with it. So, the big question is, "If you already have an iPhone 4, should you make the jump over to Verizon?" If Verizon is more reliable in your area and you're willing to break your contract and pay a fee somewhere between $250 and $300, you can, but I'd wait about six months because, you know what's coming? The iPhone 5 or Verizon will probably call it something like the iPhone V because V is for Verizon and V is also the Roman numeral for five. Yeah. And, a more Verizon news, they also confirmed that they'll be selling a version of the iPAD in the future that will connect directly to their network without the need for a MiFi card. No word if it's the current iPAD or next gen iPAD, but I'm thinking next gen. Alright, that's enough Verizon iPhone use, let's take a break with a first look at something special, we got our hands-on the next iOS 4.3 and some of its new features. Hey guys, Brian Tong here with CNET.com and we have a first look at Apple's iOS 4.3 beta that's been released to developers, but not the general public yet. So, we'll show you what's inside for both the iPAD and the iPhone. Now, the most exciting changes are on the iPAD. Apple is now giving users the option to decide if they want the switch on the side to be a mute switch or a screen rotation lock. You'll find the option in the Settings and, after all the complaining, Apple has finally given us a choice. Now, the sweetest feature is support for four-finger and five-finger multi-touch gestures. You can now switch between all of your open apps with a swipe to the side with four fingers and you can go back and forth between your apps. Some of them might take a little time to load while you switch, but this is still the developer's build. Now, if you wanna close an app and return to the Home screen, pinch your four or five fingers together and it will return to the Home screen. Pretty nifty. And, if you want access to the multitasking bar, swipe up from the bottom to the top with four or five fingers and voila! You've got that too. Now, you do have the option to turn these gestures on or off in the Settings. On the iPhone, we all know that Verizon is offering the mobile hotspot feature which allows you to take your connection and share with up to five other devices. On the current build of iOS 4.3, you also have that option for GSM carriers like AT&T. So, if you go to the Settings and then Network, we'll see the Personal Hotspot option, but it isn't an active feature that AT&T has made available yet. Now, the iPhone version of iOS 4.3 also gives you the option to play your message alert tone up to 10 times every two minutes just to make sure you get your messages. And, the screen shot sound effect is slightly different and I'm not making this up, but you might like it. And, on both the iPhone and iPAD, there's a new font available called Noteworthy in the Notes app. And, let's be honest, that's one of the features your most excited about. Now, these features aren't final, so don't get too attached to them and Apple may choose to remove them or keep them at any time, but there you have it. Now, Apple has revealed when it will be released, but I can't tell you how many people I had to hurt to get that information. Now, there's also some hot information that people have been diggin' up with the new release of the iOS beta. With the addition of gestures to switch the Home screen and navigate through apps, Boy Genius is reporting that Apple will get rid of the physical Home button on both the next gen iPAD and the iPhone. Now, it's been reported that, actually, he didn't want any physical buttons on the original iPhone and that could happen, but I still think you really need a Home button as a reference for accessibility and especially on a smaller design like the iPhone because I'm not planning to use five fingers on my iPhone. 9 to 5 Mac has found images for the iPAD with the same shutter screen and camera icons found on the iPhone. The size of the images were 1024 x 768 which is the same resolution as the original iPAD, so we know what camera is coming, but it could mean the resolution of the iPAD 2 screen will remain the same and that would be a bummer. Now, website Ispazio also has found a file that hints at new photo effects being included that are similar to the 5th gen Nano like thermal camera. I'm hoping for x-ray and a lot of others. Also, new feature found by Mac rumors called Find My Friends that's related to the MobileMe has also been discovered, so Apple might be getting into the location-based services as well as long as you have friends which I do. Right, Ariel? -Yeah. -And, along with these beta updates, Apple also updated the Apple TV software which will now allow AirPlay video from third party apps to communicate to the device. If you own older hardware, it looks like the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch second gen users will be left behind in this latest update. We know this is how Apple pushes people to update our text, so please feel free to kick someone in the nuts. Not really. Alright, that's gonna do it for this week's show.
