First Look ? SnagIt9 Dek: The newest version of SnagIt's screen capture app makes a bang with a major interface overhaul and brawny new tools. This is JD with CNET DL.com and here's a first look at SnagIt 9. The preeminent image- capture tool makes a much bolder statement in this major upgrade, with a dark, sleek look and plenty of new features. Let's take a look. ### Upon start-up, SnagIt 9's interface makes a big impression. While the layout hasn't changed much, the color scheme has. It's dark and sleek now, which really helps functions pop. In the center are the preset capture profiles that let you select a capture region or create your own profile. Below are the profile settings that let you get more detailed by automatically adding one or more outputs and multiple effects to an image after it's been grabbed. To the left are quick links to the Editor and tasks for starting batch conversion and general data housekeeping. ### SnagIt's capabilities have always been strong, but the revamped Editor brings it all to the surface. This version corrects a lot of organizational oversight that buried a wealth of tools in the menu system. Now it's all visual. The program has been modeled on Microsoft Office 2007 and sports almost an identical layout with a start button and visual task ribbon up top. I think this is a very successful design because it makes unearthing the toolbar effects so easy. ### The second ribbon down below is a brand new feature. Called the Open Capture Tray, this is where SnagIt 9 will keep a running tab of images you've recently captured or opened. Even better, SnagIt autosaves the images within the program. That means they'll be there for you when you reopen the application and you'll be able to re-edit or send them with a quick click. ### Let's say you're looking for an image you captured awhile back. You can use this search pane to quickly find it with a keyword search or by scrolling through tags, dates, and folders. Tagging is another brand new feature that lets you associate a capture with keywords and flag it as important, personal, and so on. If you grabbed the capture from a Web site, you can also keep track of the date and time stamp and the URL. ### There are way too many individual features to run through, so I'll leave you with those major changes to workflow and design. I will say that there are also features to attach interactive hotspots to an image, export the image, and fine-tune effects. I'll also mention SnagIt's text, video, and Web capture profiles, though image capture is the strongest and most used feature. It's hinted that these will be the next features to receive an overhaul. In the meantime, I highly recommend SnagIt 9 for avid screen capture users, especially now that it's also received the layout upgrades to the editor to make it a really valuable, user-friendly program. I'm JD and you've been looking at SnagIt 9. ###
