>> Hi, this is Justin Nu [assumed spelling], assistant editor for cnet.com, here today with the Smart Parts SPAPRT digital photo frame. We reviewed a lot of photo frames in the past, but this one is unique in that it integrates a dye sublimation printer into the side here. The only problem is that the printer is in the back of the device, which creates a much larger overall footprint. So the front is really basic. All you have is the 800 x 600 VGA screen, which is wrapped by this plastic material here, and that's bordered by a faux wood finish. Now a lot of the digital photo frames that we've tested in the past actually have a touch screen that makes it really easy to navigate through menus, but the Smart Parts SPAPRT actually uses hard buttons on the side of the device. And it creates a hassle because you have to keep turning the unit to the side to see which buttons to press. On the back you'll find a card slot for SD, MMC, and memory stick, as well as a USB one point one port, you don't get two point oh on this, as well as an on off switch. So the printer itself uses this proprietary ink and paper cartridge, and we've factored it out, and the prints cost about fifty cents per photo, which is about double the amount of money that it costs for your standard hundred dollar inkjet printer. Instead of using the buttons on the side of the photo frame, we actually found it a lot easier to use the included remote, which is pretty all inclusive. It has buttons for setup, print, slideshow, as well as a bunch of directional buttons. But a few other hardware mission that we didn't like is that there's no headphone jack, and you can't play MP3 files, the only sound format that it takes is WMV. So you're gonna have to convert all of your audio files if you want to have music with your slide shows. Also there's only a hundred and twenty eight megabytes of internal memory. Most digital photo frames have at least two hundred and fifty six. We weren't too happy with the printer either. It's slow, takes about a minute for each photo to print. The printer's also really loud, and it emits kind of a funky smell. If you've really got to have digital photo frame and a photo printer, we don't suggest this hybrid. [ background music ] We recommend you just get two separate devices. I'm Justin Nu, and this is the Smart Parts SPAPRT digital photo frame and printer. ^M00:01:59 [ music ]

SmartParts SP8PRT Review

Editors' rating

The good: Vibrant screen resolution, print order queue, all-inclusive infrared remote.

The bad: Large footprint, no touch screen, counterintuitive button layout, USB 1.1, meager memory capacity, lacks hardware features commonly found on digital photo frames; expensive cartridges.

The bottom line: The SmartParts SP8PRT's laundry list of negatives far outweighs the positives, proving that some devices just aren't meant to be hybridized. If you simply must have both digital photo frame and a printer, do yourself a favor--stay away from this toy and purchase two separate devices.
