>> Seth: One of the highest rated free security programs according to third party testers and one of the most popular according to Download.com users is Avira AntiVir. Hi, I'm Seth Rosenblatt from CNETDownload.com and today we're taking a first look at AntiVir 9. AntiVir offers nearly every major security feature you could want in a suite protecting against viruses, spyware and other malware, root kits, uristics and more in just one engine; this allows scans to occur faster and prevents the real-time defense from dragging down your system. The main window lets users know how recent scans and updates have performed with the real-time guard status the last system scan, the last virus definition file update and license information. From there further information isn't far away click on configuration then expert mode, scan and action for concerning files to reach one of the best new features in AntiVir 9, one click threat removal set it for automatic and you can have all threats quarantined before they get dealt with by one of two customizable actions. Set it for interactive and you can manage threats individually or as a group. According to Avira this feature was suggested by Download.com users. There's a scheduler that lets you determine the type of scan and how many scans you run so you can set longer scans for when you know you'll be away from your computer. The quarantine helpfully provides a quick link to email suspected threats to Avira for additional testing. Explicit email scanning has been removed from the free edition of version 9 but since AntiVir treats newly opened emails as files there shouldn't be any additional risk to users. Other changes in AntiVir 9 are under the hood and include full anti-spyware and anti-adware abilities, protection against infection for Antivir's own files, the ability to scan locked files and a rebuilt uristics detection engine. The program is still a pain to uninstall and some users are likely to be turned off by the nag screen that appears after a definition file update, but it's hard to argue that this isn't one of the best free security programs available. With your first look at Avira AntiVir 9 I'm Seth Rosenblatt for Download.com. ^M00:02:15
