Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Video Transcript

>>Hey, I'm Justin Yu, Associate Editor for CNET.com with a first look video of this Editor's Choice winning external hard drive, it's the this Seagate's FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive. And what makes this drive different is the ability to mix and match the connection cables, Seagate calls them "personality cables," that attach to the different ports on your computer. The basic bundle at $100 for the 320GB model only comes with this USB 2.0 cable but you can also buy different ones to fit USB 3.0, eSATA and FireWire 800 ports for only $30 a piece. The drive itself is your standard 2.5-inch hard disk but it runs at 7,200 RPMs as opposed to the standard 5,400 which translates up to 10 times the speed when paired with a USB 3.0 cable. Along with the drive you also get two innovative programs already installed. One let's you save your data using file based backups and the other allows the drive to be read by both windows and Mac OS computers. And for its versatility, transfer speed and excellent costs per gigabyte value, we're happy to award the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex our coveted Editor's Choice Award. You can read the full review on CNET.com, but that's going to do it for me. This is the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex, I'm Justin Yu and that sounds pretty good to me.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro (500GB) Review

The good: Interchangeable "personality cables" add value in versatility and speed; inexpensive; works with Mac and Windows OS; three-year warranty; Memeo backup software included.

The bad: Three-year warranty, compared with five years for older FreeAgent drives (still better than most portables hard drives).

The bottom line: Though other external hard drives offer a preset menu of ports, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex cuts costs by letting you pick from a buffet of "personality cables" so that you buy only the connections that suit your system profile. We applaud Seagate for making data backups easier than ever, and recommend the FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive for extra data storage now and easy upgrades in the future.
