>> Hi. I'm Kent German, senior editor here at CNET.com. Today we're gonna take a First Look at the Samsung Z400. This is a new phone for Sprint service. The Z400 is one of Sprint's first phones to run in its QChat service. And what QChat is, it's just a way for Sprint's CDMA phones -- so those are the phones that Sprint has always used -- to be able to get onto the direct connect network, which is the push-to-talk network that Nextel users have always had. You might notice that, like a lot of Nextel phones that we used to see with direct connect; this Z400 does have a lot of rubber sidings on it, here on the front. Here on the side, on the back a little bit, too. So that makes it pretty durable, really targeted to that user who maybe works outdoors, who sort of, maybe, is kind of an extreme sports person, who really needs a phone that can take a lot of blows. I also like the rubber sidings because they're black and they contrast nicely with the dark blue on the phone. So it makes for a nice color combination. Even with all that padding, the phone really isn't too heavy. It feels pretty light in the hands, and it does have a really nice, solid feel, which is always great. You can open that, flip it back and forth, and feel like it will last a long time. Here on the front, we have a couple of speakers. There is a camera lens up at the top. There's no flash. The external display is monochrome, so it doesn't show photo caller ID, but it will work as a very rudimentary viewfinder for the display. The display is kind of small, I thought, just a little scrunched up here. Still, it shows all the information you need. Here on this side, there's a volume rocker, a push-to-talk button, 2.5-millimeter headset jack. Here on the top -- these buttons will look familiar to Nextel subscribers 'cause you have your speakerphone button. Press this other button; go through your recent calls list to make a call without opening the phone. And then here on this side, you have a camera button and headset jack. Open up the phone. Internal display was fine. It showed a lot of colors. I found that the menu icons were a tiny bit small, but you can change the text on the menu, and also the dialing text. I really liked the navigation controls, found them pretty big. And even though they are flat with the surface of the phone, you really get a nice feeling to them. You can press the button; you can feel your finger sinking down. So you know you're actually pressing something. Keypad buttons are about the same. They are flat with the surface of the phone as well. But I like the large numbers. The backlighting was pretty bright. And they just do have a nice, tactile feel to them as well. Inside you'll find Bluetooth, speakerphone, the camera -- that's a 1.3 megapixel -- a fair assortment of organized features, voiced dialing. So really a nice features set, sort of business oriented in a lot of ways. Email and IM, you have to go on the web browser to use those.
