Samsung Trance (Verizon Wireless) Video Transcript

>> Nicole Lee: I'm Nicole Lee Associate Editor for CNET.com and this is a first look at the Samsung Trance from Verizon Wireless. As you can see here it's a very beautiful and stylish phone, very slim profile, round up corners and a shape reminiscent of a violin. The front surface is quite reflective and it's a little fingerprint prone. The display measures 2.1 inches diagonally and looks lovely with 262,000 color support. On the [inaudible] the display is a touch sensitive navigation pad. It consists of the 2 soft keys, the navigation toggle, the middle ok key, the dedicated music player key and the clear key. Th array here is very flat with the surface of the phone and you have to rely on the keys vibration feedback to get a feel for them. You can however adjust the touch vibration settings and the sensitivity level. When the phone is closed you won't be able to use the array until you unlock it. While we understand this touchpad provides a very sleek look for the Trance we still would prefer physical keys for easier navigation. Slide the phone up to reveal the number key pad and the send, camera, and end power keys. The key pad is quite flat but there are row dividers between each key for better feel when dialing. On the left side of the Trance are the volume rocker, the hold or keypad lock key, the Micro SD card slot and the charger jack. We're definitely happy to see its 3.5 mm headset jack here because the Trance is a music phone after all. The camera is only revealed when you slide the phone up, it's on the back next to the self portrait mirror. The primary feature of the Trance is the music player and it was partially designed by Bang and Olivson [assumed spelling] so you will definitely get good audio quality out of this. The interface is very simple and easy to use with the album art in the center and the player controls underneath. You can view the music library, create and edit playlists and set the song on shuffle or repeat. There are 11 preset equalizer settings plus a manual mode. The music player also has 3D sound which you can only experience when the headset is plugged in. From there you can chose wide, dynamic or surround sound. If you're in an airplane you can also op for music only mode which shuts off the phones wireless signal but still let's you listen to your tunes. However, there is a big downside to this phone. There is no EVDO, this means you won't get access to Verizon's broadband services like V-Cast music so you won't be able to download songs over the air. Thankfully the Trance is a whopping 1 GB of internal memory plus you can get up to a 16 KB micro SD card for more storage. Other features of the Trance include a 1.3 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, voice command, web email, web browser, GPS ad so forth. [ Background music ]

Samsung Trance - black (Verizon Wireless) Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Samsung Trance has a beautiful and sophisticated design, plus it has stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5 millimeter headset jack. The audio quality is fantastic, especially with 3D surround sound.

The bad: We weren't pleased with the flat touch-sensitive navigation array, and the photo quality isn't great. The Samsung Trance also doesn't have EV-DO, which means it can't download songs over-the-air.

The bottom line: The Samsung Trance is a great MP3 phone that combines excellent audio quality in a slim and attractive package.
