>> Hi. This is Eric Franklin, assistant labs manager for CNET.com, and today we're looking at the Samsung SyncMaster T220. This display features Samsung's new Touch of Color bezel. This is a clear, plastic coating over the display's black bezel, with some subtle red highlights. The result is a striking look, and one that we prefer over Dell's SP 2208WP's silver bezel. Unfortunately, the T220 uses an oval-shaped base as its stand, which is prone to wobble, especially since the T220 sits up a bit high. If you bump your desk, the screen's most likely gonna shake. The only physical adjustment the T220 affords is about 30 degrees of backwards tilt. We were pleased with the on-screen display. It was very straightforward and easy to navigate. We also liked the display's ability to adjust brightness, switch between analog and digital inputs, and select among seven different image presets, all without even accessing OSD. AS for features, it's pretty sparse. You get your basic VGA and DVI port, but no HDMI port. Also missing are USB ports, and there's no webcam. However, the display does include HDCP support for high-def content. In our display-mate base performance test, the Samsung achieved average performance. It did well on our sharpness, grayscale, and screen uniformity tests, but it struggled with color accuracy. In real-world testing, however, we saw few problems. DVD playback picture quality was quite good, with accurate skin tones and vibrant colors. "Unbreakable" on DVD exhibited no color problems, however; some finer details were a bit blurry, and the edges weren't as sharp as we would have liked. The Samsung delivered okay performance, and has a very unique and aesthetically pleasing design. However, it has a very wobbly stand and the severe lack of features. So the question is, is it possible to base a monitor purchase strictly on the display's bezel? Well, anything's possible, but our advice would be to not do so. If you're in the market for a 22-inch display, we recommend instead going for the Dell 2208 WFP. It has better performance. It's about 60 bucks cheaper. And it has more features, including a webcam, HDMI jack, and USB ports. However, if eye candy is important to you, and you like to pay more for less features, then, hey, go of the Samsung. I'm sure you two will be very happy together. Once again, this is Eric Franklin. This has been the First Look at the Samsung SyncMaster T220. ^E00:02:20

Samsung SyncMaster T220 Review

The good: Smashing good looks; matte finish means less glare than with glossy screens.

The bad: A tad on the pricey side; merely average performance and feature set; wobbly stand.

The bottom line: The Samsung T220 might be the most stylish LCD monitor we've seen, but average feature set and performance diminish its overall appeal. Despite its flashy looks, it's best used as a simple, productivity display.
