-Hey guys, Eric Franklin here for CNET. And today, we're taking a First Look at the Samsung SyncMaster S27A850D. The Samsung is a 27-inch monitor aimed at professional graphic artists with a high full HD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. It's also the first Samsung monitor to employ the company's plane line switching panel technology, which offers bright displays at a lower power consumption cost. On the right side of the back section are 2 DVI ports, a single display port, and the power adaptor port. On the left side are 3 USB 3.0 downstream ports, one USB upstream, audio in, and a headphone jack. There's also an alcove-like cubby hole on the back of the panel where the display's power brick can be concealed. Helpful if wall mounting the display. The Samsung includes height adjustment, a 90-degree pivot, 45 left and right swivel, and a 20-degree back tilt. The OSD includes brightness, contrast, sharpness, RGB color controls, 6 different color temperature options, overdrive, gamma control, and 5 different presets. There's also an Ambilight sensor and a proximity sensor that allows the monitor to turn off when no one is in front of it. The Samsung also includes one of my favorite features, the echo mode, where the amount of power you're saving is represented by the amount of leaves on a little cute little tree there. In movies, the cinema preset provided the best overall experience display in rich colors in deep blacks. Games running the game preset had a high vibrancy with colors that popped as well as we've seen on any monitor before it. While it doesn't offer as many customization options for graphics artist as a few other prograde monitors do, the Samsung's option should more than satisfy most users. 4 ergonomic support, a USB 3.0 hub, and an overall stylish, but thoughtful design makes it a great choice for those looking for a pro monitor that offers more of the most. The Samsung SyncMaster 204B can handle productivity and entertainment tasks, but there are less expensive alternatives that offer comparable image quality and superior features.
The Samsung SyncMaster B2330HD takes some calibrating before it performs well, but is low priced and offers lots of features.
Samsung SyncMaster S27A850D Review
The good: The Samsung SyncMaster S27A850D delivers great overall performance, and has a useful assortment of connections, including three USB 3.0 ports. The monitor's stylish but practical design provides many ergonomic options.
The bad: Compared with other professional monitors, the S27A850D lacks a few OSD configuration details. Also, HDMI would have been useful.
The bottom line: The Samsung SyncMaster S27A850D is a well-designed, stylish, professional monitor with great options and performance.
