>> [ music ] Hi everyone this is Eric Franklin, assistant labs manager for CNET dot com and this monstrosity sitting next to me barely allowing me into the frame, is the Samsung SyncMaster 305T. The biggest selling point for this display is it's 30 inch screen which supports a native resolution of 2560 by 1600. However in order to view the screen at this very high resolution, you need two things. You need a dual link DVI cable which Samsung provides, and a high end video card which will support that high resolution. While the display was still functional, the single link cable and a low end video card, the resolution will be kept at 1920 by 1440. The Samsung has features abound; by abound I mean severely lacking. You're only allowed to adjust the brightness and there are no color or contrast controls at all, and there's only one DVI port so no other video or options are available. Samsung was generous enough to throw in 4 USB downstream and 1 USB upstream ports however. The screen hat is adjustable and the display rotates back about 30 degrees. It also rotates left and right about 70 degrees on this sort of lazy susan embedded design here. The viewing angle's one of the best we've ever seen. Samsung claims that it has a viewing angle of 178 degrees and we really have to back that up because we found that no matter what angle we viewed the display from, we saw no noticeable drop in quality. The Samsung did really well in our display made based performance tests, in particular in color and sharpness. However it did have some problems with our streaking tests. Our streaking test helps us detect light or dark shadows that trail an image in areas where large changes in contrast are present. This test basically deals only with problems that arise when a display renders a large chunky graphic like a bar graph. DVD and Blu-Ray playback was as good as we've ever seen. In particularly we noticed a very high color quality in both DVD and Blu-Ray. This is one of the only 30 inch monitors out there right now, so your choices are pretty limited if you're in the market for a 30 inch display. The price is gonna be about 1,200 to 1,600, which is about the same price as you pay for any 30 inch monitor actually. We found that the color and the viewing angle of this display were pretty much incredible. However, it's lack of video connections may turn some buyers off. With that said, if you simply must have a 30 inch display this Samsung would do nicely. Once again, I'm Eric Franklin, this has been the first look at the Samsung SyncMaster 305T. [ music ]

The good: Great performance in color and sharpness; amazing viewing angle; Blu-ray and DVD image quality is some of the best we've seen.
The bad: Limited video connection options; includes only brightness controls (thanks to technical limitations); streaking apparent in DisplayMate test.
The bottom line: Thanks to its incredible viewing angle, high resolution, and stellar overall picture quality, Samsung's 30-inch SyncMaster 305T gets an assured recommendation.
