>> Hi. I'm Kent German, senior editor at CNET.com, here to take a first look at the Samsung SPH M520. This is a new phone for Sprint service. As Samsung phones go, this is pretty standard. There's really not a lot going on here. Really hoping for a long time that Samsung would give us kinda something new, something really kind of outrageous, and something just different we haven't seen in a while. They've been relying on the sort of the thin, slider phone for a long time. In any case, it is an attractive phone. It's the actual first Power Vision phone, so that means 3G Sprint for all the 3G services that Sprint has. Overall, it is pretty thin of course. It has just a standard silver. Samsung always does good with their displays, so this is no exception. It's pretty bright and colorful. Actually, it has kind of an interesting menu layer on the front. You can see it here. You don't have to use this at all. You can actually take it away and then in that mode the toggle acts as short cuts to four functions. But I kind of like this. It just was able to cycle through things. In the demo, I did like the toggle and the OK button. And we liked that the OK button actually goes into the menus rather than opening the web browser or something like that. We have a speakerphone button, a couple of soft keys, talk and end, and a dedicated back key as well. Keypad buttons, they're raised above the surface of the phone. If you're on this side, there's a volume rocker, and there's the port for the charger and headset. This is a Blutooth phone, so you might be using a Blutooth headset a lot, but just -- with that combined port, keep in mind that you can only use a wired headset or a charger, and not both at the same time. Here on this side we have a dedicated camera button, and the micro SD slot. The camera lens is here on the back. There's a self-portrait mirror, so you can take those vanity shots. When the phone is down, they're hidden, so you will need a phone out to shoot. There's no flash, which is disappointing. Inside, there is that 3G support, as I said. There's a mega pixel camera, 1.3. There's stereo Blutooth, speakerphone, and all the kind of personal organizer options you might expect. Overall, a pretty nice phone, though nothing really too exciting. I'm Kent German. This is the Samsung SPH M520. ^E00:01:47 [ Music ]

Samsung SPH-M520 - gray (Sprint) Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Samsung SPH-M520 has a decent set of features, a bright display, easy-to-use control interface and satisfying performance.

The bad: The Samsung SPH-M20 had sluggish camera menus, and it picked up some background noise during calls. Also it uses a proprietary headset jack.

The bottom line: It doesn't offer anything new, but the Samsung SPH-M520 is one of the better Sprint Power Vision phones we've seen.
