>> Hi, I'm Kent German, senior editor here at CNET.com. Today we are going to take a personal look at the Samsung SGHM500; this is a new phone for Sprint service. The M500 is basically a copy of the T-Mobile phone, called the Samsung SGHT619. See it has the same shape, same silver, same kind of thin form factor with the external display. Only thing that really changed is that Sprint logo down there. Overall I thought it was kind of a plane sign, certainly not unattractive, definitely compact, but just not very stylish so don't think there was a whole lot of pizzazz to it. Do have a volume rocker here, interestingly enough the headset jack has been moved from the left side where it was on the 2619, to hear on the right side just above the voice dial button. You also have a micro-SD slot, which wasn't a feature on the 2619, but that is located down here in the camera lens is just the same. Open up the phone, inside you have a very standard design, same kind of internal display, a pretty bright and colorful, having few menu choices as well. Navigation keypad also similar, two very large soft keys, you have a four way toggle with an okay button in the center, talk and end keys and a back button. The keypad buttons, weren't real thrilled with those, like a lot of thin phones, these are flat with the surface of the phone, and they are a little slick. They are big enough however and they do have the large numbers and they do have bright backlighting, just want to be aware that they are a little slick and your finger can slide around just a bit. The M500 also has a few more features than the 2619, you get the video access to Sprint's power vision multimedia service and to the Sprint music store, so definitely if you like the design but you want a view more features the M500 is probably a better idea. I'm Kent German and this is the Samsung SGHM500. ^M00:01:34 [ Music ]

Editors' rating

The good: The Samsung SPH-M500 offers good call quality and a generous range of features, including Bluetooth, a speakerphone, an external memory card slot, and EV-DO compatibility.

The bad: The Samsung SPH-M500 has slippery keys, and its video and music quality is below par.
