>> Kent German: I'm Kent German Senior Editor here at CNET.com. Today we're gonna take a first look at the Samsung SPHM240. This is a new phone for Sprint service. This phone is all about the basics, basic design, basic features. Really for making calls, sending messages, there's no camera, no music player or anything really to confuse you. The only thing that's unique is the external display can see it's in a vertical orientation. Despite [inaudible] assigned to basic information; numeric caller ID, date, time, battery life, signal strength. Over on this side there's just the volume rocker. Over here we have a 2.5 mm headset jack. We raise a stink about that on most phones but this isn't really designed for multimedia so its fine and we do like that it's not a proprietary connection anyway. Over here there is the micro USB slot that is for the charger. It's nice that Samsung is moving gradually toward what a lot of manufacturers have developed as the standard for chargers which will be micro USB so you could use a few different chargers for this phone. Inside display is decent, not real sharp, not real vibrant but perfectly fine for a phone like this, really designed just for seeing your messages, for going through the menus. Menus are easy to use, simply designed and navigation controls and keypad were also satisfactory. They do have a toggle here; it is slightly raised above the surface of the phone, ok button in the middle, 2 soft keys, talk and end key and a back key. Keypad buttons are separated from each other, they are flat. They didn't feel too slippery so we had no problems texting or dialing and the numbers on the keys are pretty large too and there's bright back lighting [background music ]

>> So inside you'll find basic organizer features, messaging and speaker phone and that's pretty much it, so really just for communication. I'm Kent German and this is Samsung SPHM240.
