>> Hi, I'm Kent German [phonetic], senior editor here at www.cnet.com.

>> Today we're going to take a first look at the Samsung SCH-R210, also called the Samsung Spex. This is a phone from MetroPCS services. MetroPCS tends to have really basic phones. And this phone is very much like that. It's not a camera. Nothing really fancy like a MP3 player, any kind of video, really just a messaging phone, and phone for making calls. The design is very, very simple, user friendly, has just a [inaudible] line, nothing really on the sides. You just have a volume rocker, and the charger port. But certainly the design is very friendly, even if it is simple. And the phone's certainly not unattractive. The main display is colorful. It's pretty bright. The resolution isn't that great, as you'd expect on a phone like this. But overall it shows everything you need to. Just down below are the couple of soft keys, the navigation toggle, and an OK button in the center. These were raised [inaudible] of the phone, which is nice, so you can really get in there and get your finger around. And I thought for the phone size, the keys were actually a pretty good size. Keypad buttons are also, have a little bit of tactical [assumed spelling] definition, not much, but they're pretty easy to use. Like the numbers on the, keys were pretty big. The keys themselves were pretty big as well, so really had no trouble dialing on this phone, using it for texting or getting into the menus. Menus are very simple. Just has messaging, has a web browser. So you can get in there and download stuff you want. Just simple organizer functions, and that's about it. So very, very basic phone for making calls, but some people that's all you need, so this might be a phone for you.

Samsung Spex SCH-R210 (MetroPCS) Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Samsung Spex has a simple, easy-to-use design and a functional feature set.

The bad: The Samsung Spex's call quality sounded a bit hollow. Also, it takes too many clicks to activate the speakerphone.

The bottom line: The Samsung Spex is a decent cell phone for making calls, but there are better options from MetroPCS.
