>> Josh Goldman: Hi. I'm Josh Goldman, Senior Editor for CNET Reviews, and this is a look at the Samsung SMXF34. It's a standard definition camcorder. It sells for less than $300. Features a 34x zoom lens and 16 gigs of internal flash memory for storing more than six hours of video at its highest quality. The camcorder is well designed overall and uses Samsung's nice swivel grip. [Inaudible] from shooting overhead and underhand without moving your hand from the grip itself. Controls are simple to use, and you can record, zoom from the back of the camcorder as well as from the controls on the left side of the 2.7 inch LCD. Behind this door and back are power and AV jacks and a mini USB port. In the bottom is the battery compartment, SDHC card slot for expanding storage. Know that you have 34 certainly seems like a camcorder for point-and-shoot users with a couple of auto modes and eight scene shooting options. Samsung does include manual controls of focus, shutter speed, exposure, and white balance. However, one thing that is missing from the features set is optical image stabilization to help control shake with the mega zoom lens. The video quality is pretty typical of consumer standard definition camcorders meaning it's soft and generally grainy looking with interlacing and compression artifacts. It's not horrible, but you certainly won't confuse it for high-def. I'm Josh Goldman, and that's the Samsung SMXF34. [ Music ]

Ep. 91: Samsung goes green

Samsung and Sprint have jumped on the green bandwagon: they launched a new eco-friendly phone last week, the Samsung Reclaim. Speaking of green, some handset manufacturers and carriers think we're rolling in money and are charging some jaw-dropping prices for their devices. We're not quite sure what they're thinking, especially after a Gartner study finds that North Americans pay more for cell phone service than other parts of the world. We've got all this and more on this week's Dialed In podcast.

Samsung SMX-F34 camcorder (blue) Review

The good: Comfortable, compact design; 34x zoom lens; 16GB internal memory; good audio quality; relatively easy to operate.

The bad: Slow autofocus performance; long zoom lens lacks optical image stabilization.

The bottom line: The Samsung SMX-F34 is a serviceable inexpensive standard-definition camcorder, but the money goes more to storage and the megazoom lens than to video quality.
