Samsung Series 9 (11-inch) Video Transcript

I'm Dan Ackerman and we are here taking a look at the new 11-inch version of the Samsung Series 9 Laptop. Now, this looks a little bit familiar that's because it's nearly identical to the larger 13-inch version of the series 9 we looked at a couple of months ago. Obviously, that 13-inch super thin laptop was designed to compete with Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air. So, this 11.6-inch version, you could see where it going. This is designed to compete with the 11-inch MacBook Air. They are actually very similar, both very lightweight, both very thin. The series 9 is actually made. The aluminum composite that's supposedly twice as tough as aluminum, still very light. It's kind of black brush metal look, would pick something you print a little bit, but still very sharp looking, and it's got features that we really wish was on the MacBook Air, but it's not. It's kind of backed with keyboard. Now, there are couple of areas where the series 9 falls a little bit behind of that MacBook air. Number is price. The 11-inch Air is 999. This guy starts at 1199. If you trade your MacBook up to the 1199 price, you actually get twice as much hard drive space. You got a 128 G solid state drive. This only is at 64, although the Air has an older Core 2 Duo CPU. This guy has an Intel Core i3, but it's less to your 2010 Core i3, not the newer version, which has better battery life and better integrated graphics. The Series 9 has an extra large touch pad. We like that a lot. The multi top gestures especially 2 finger scrolling not quite as smooth as they are on the MacBook, but you can see that about any windows laptop. Definitely has more port and connections than the MacBook Air does, but they're hitting behind this slightly hard to get to little plastic cover. You got to kind of move this out of the way in order to get the ports and connections on either side of the laptop. Another development that might attract potential MacBook buyers, Samsung has a very low power instant sleep state, much like a MacBook does. You just close the lid, it goes into this zero power mode. You can leave it like this for a long time, and then when you open the lid back up, it just pops right back on. At almost 1200 dollars, this definitely a premium priced laptop. I think the market is trying to go for it here as people want an ultra thin, ultra portable machine, but for whatever reason, maybe it's worth, maybe it's just an operating system bias. They wanna have a Windows machine, not a Mac one. If you're looking for that in 11-inch laptop, There are lot of less expensive models around like the $500 HP Pavilion dm1z, but if you're looking for something an ultra premium, ultra portable category, this is pretty much the only game in town.
