>> Hi I'm Kent German, senior editor here at CNET.com. Today we are going to take a first look at the Samsung SCHU620. This is one of Verizon's new phones that support the carriers V cast TV service. Now this is different from their V cast streaming video service, its actual TV signals that are coming out of the phone. Unfortunately we can't show it to you here at our studio in San Francisco because V cast TV does not receive coverage here, however we will talk about the full quality in our full review. Overall it doesn't look very exciting, it really doesn't show you what's inside the phone. Pretty standard Samsung design, it is a slider phone, slides just up and down like that. Here on the outside you can see the display. Though it's not pretty small for the phone overall it is pretty small for viewing TV, Verizon has another TV phone out there called the LGVX 9400 which features a little bigger screen and so we are eager to see that one. The screen is pretty bright and colorful overall. It actually does have a little bit of a different menu design as well. Verizon hasn't received a lot of great reviews for their standardized menu interface, so this is a little better. Down below you have a standard Samsung navigation array, you can see of the squarish[SP?] toggle, moves for ways, you have an okay button in the middle, a couple of soft keys here, talk and end power key. Keypad buttons just below, they are raised slightly above the surface of the phone, so that's great for dialing by feel, they are pretty easy to use, also pretty big with somewhat large numbers on them as well. Here on this side you have a volume rocker; you also have a micro-ST slot and a great location just right on the outside and you do have a headset jack. Finally on the side you do have a speaker phone button, you have a dedicated camera button and a dedicated button for accessing the V cast TV. You know if we were able to watch the V cast TV, we would just flip the phone on its side, raise the antenna like that, and now this antenna isn't used for making calls, it is dedicated to receiving a TV signal, so it does have a little bit of a unique look when flipped up like that. After we pressed a button on the top and choose a couple of options you can see that the screen orientation does automatically rotate. And now again we can't see a TV signal here, so you will see that it is just showing nothing, but you get the idea of how you'll be holding the phone to watch the TV screen. Other features the phone does have a 1.3 mega pixel camera, also has a couple of features like speakerphone and Bluetooth and things like that. I'm Kent German and this is the Samsung SCHU620. ^M00:02:04 [ Music ]

Samsung Mobi SCH-U620 (Verizon Wireless) Review

Editors' rating

The good: The SCH-U620 is the first cell phone to support Verizon's V Cast Mobile TV service. With excellent video performance, a 1.3-megapixel camera and camcorder, Bluetooth connectivity, and music playback, this is a full-featured multimedia phone.

The bad: Given that live TV is the big selling point, the external speakers could be more robust and the display could be larger. Also, the fairly drab design belies the SCH-U620's cutting-edge factor, and the music and video playback could be a lot simpler. It also has a disappointing battery life.

The bottom line: The first of two phones that support V Cast Mobile TV, the SCH-U620 is a solid performer. But those looking for more flash may want to wait for the LG VX9400.
