>> I'm Nicole Lee, Associate Editor for CNET.com, and this is a first look at the Samsung Jitterbug J. The Samsung Jitterbug J is the successor to the Jitterbug Dial, which was a phone, made specifically for senior citizens. The Jitterbug J still has that same simplicity, but is now being marketed as a phone for everyone regardless of age. As you can see here it's a big rounded clamshell. It's around 4.4 ounces, which gives it a nice heft. On the front is a 1-inch monochrome external display that shows the basic date, time, and caller ID information, underneath that is a rubber volume rocker. The position is a little odd, since you have to reach behind the phone to adjust the volume. Open up the phone and you easily notice the first thing that makes the new Jitterbug J so unique, an actual dial tone. This gives it the feel of a landline phone, which is useful for those who are new to cell phones. The 2.3 inch display is nice and bright with a simple menu that you can navigate by scrolling up and down. There aren't a lot of display options though; you can't adjust the brightness or backlight time. However, you can change the color of the upper and lower boarders. Surrounding the display is a rubber ear cushion, which feels very comfortable against the ear. Underneath this display is one of the roomiest and most basic keypad we've ever seen on a cell phone. There's a dedicated on-off switch, dedicated speakerphone key, a really simple up and down scroll buttons, plus yes and no buttons to help navigate the menu. The navigation array and the number keypad have large backlit buttons that is very hard to miss and very easy to dial. As you might expect there aren't a lot of features on the Jitterbug J. The phonebook only has 50 entries, and only 1 number per contact, which can be frustrating. There's also voice dialing and voice mail. Please note that the voice mail costs $2.00 a month. Jitterbug offers 24-hour operator assistance, meaning you can dial zero to make phone calls or even to manage your phonebook. Each operator assisted call will cost you five minutes from your allotted monthly minutes. Other Jitterbug services include 24 hour roadside assistance that will help you with car trouble for $4.00 a month, handset replacement insurance for $4.00 a month, and a 24 hour live nurse hotline to answer all of your healthcare questions for another $4.00 a month.
