>>Hi I'm Kent German; I'm Senior Editor here at cnet.com. Today's your first look at the Samsung Jetset, also called the SCH-R550, this is a phone for Cricket wireless. What we have here is a basic Samsung flip phone. We really don't see anything we haven't seen before, it's typically the black color, pretty smooth lines, feels light in the hand, plastic casing. Do have external music controls below the display; even those we've seen a lot of times before on Samsung phones. Feature wise, this is pretty basic as well. It has a media player, a megapixel camera, personal organizer, speaker phone and some Bluetooth, but really it's just about making calls, sending messages with a couple of extra features. External display - no bigger than a postage stamp, really, but it shows all of the information you need like the date, time, battery life, signal strength. It does work as a viewfinder for the camera lens, which is right above. Also shows photo caller id. Here on the side you have a volume rocker, you have a micro SD slot - it's nice that it's not buried behind the battery. Over here there is a headset jack; it is 2.5 mm, so you'll want to be aware of that - so you will need an adapter if you want to use standard headphones. Here below that you have a camera shutter and below that is the proprietary charger jack. Inside the phone, you have an internal display - pretty bright and colorful - menus are easy to use, intuitive. It also has those pop-up menus where you can see what options are actually in that menu choice as you cycle through them with the navigation controls. Navigation controls are pretty spacious - they are flush with the surface of the phone - but I found them easy to use simply because there was so much size, especially those talk and power keys, clear key and soft key. The navigation toggle does have a slight ridge surrounding it, one circle here, then another surrounding the ok button - really couldn't feel it though when you're dragging your finger across unless you pressed pretty firmly. The keys felt pretty good - weren't too slippery - felt nice beneath the finger. Same goes with the keypad buttons; they're also flush, but there's so much room that we didn't have any problems. You could text and dial pretty quickly, there's also a nice back light for dialing in dense situations. Since the phone has a plastic casing, it doesn't feel like it would really stand up to a lot of blows, but overall it had a nice, comfortable feel in the hand; hinge feels pretty sturdy as well. If you're a Cricket customer and you'd like a little music on your phone, with a couple of extra features, not a bad option, pretty good call quality as well. I'm Kent German and this is Samsung JetSet. ^M00:02:06 [ Music ]

Samsung JetSet SCH-r550 (Cricket) Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Samsung JetSet has a simple design with comfortable controls. Call quality is decent, and the feature set includes voice dialing and stereo Bluetooth.

The bad: The Samsung JetSet has poor photo quality and a 2.5-millimeter headset jack. Speakerphone volume is too low.

The bottom line: We wouldn't call the Samsung JetSet a "full-fledged music phone," but if you're looking for a functional handset that makes calls and plays tunes on the side then it's not a bad choice.
