>> Matthew Moskovciak: Hi. I'm Matthew Moskovciak, Senior Associate Editor at CNET, and we're going to take a look at the Samsung HWC450. This is a sound bar home theater system, which means you don't need a separate AV receiver, and it's currently selling for about $300. The design on the HWC450 is unique in that it's less than two inches thin, which is really impressive when you consider that it has built-in amplification. Along the top are a few touch sensitive buttons, and there's also an LCD display. So you have some visual feedback when you're making adjustments. The HWC450 also includes a wireless subwoofer, and we didn't have any problems with dropouts or noise during our testing period. A small remote is included, and we appreciated that Samsung kept it simple with an uncluttered design. We also like that you can adjust the subwoofer volume right from the remote instead of having to go into the menu. Around back are the connectivity options, which are less extensive than we would have liked. The big omission is HDMI connectivity. and Sony's competing HTCT150 offers three HDMI inputs for around the same price. The Samsung includes two optical inputs and a mini jack input. So you should make sure that that's enough to accommodate your home theater gadgets before you buy. As for sound quality, we were really impressed by the HWC450, especially for its size. Movies sounded particularly detailed, and there was also enough power for smaller rooms. The Samsung didn't fare as well with two-channel music, so it's not the best option if you still plan on listening to a lot of CD's or mp3's. All together, if the lack of HDMI connectivity doesn't bother you, the Samsung HWC450 is one of the sleekest sound bar home theater systems we've tested, making it a good pick for style-minded buyers who mostly watch movies. The Aperion Signature SLIMstage30 costs more than most sound bar home theater systems and lacks HDMI connectivity, but it's one of the few sound bars that put out enough bass without a sub.
The Sony HT-SS360 is an inexpensive home theater system with generous HDMI connectivity and satisfying sound on movies, but don't expect it to deliver with music.
VC's TH-BA1 sound bar home theater system is affordable, easy to use and sounds better-than-expected, but doesn't offer HDMI connectivity.
The Sony BDV-E770W is one of the best Blu-ray home theater systems we've tested, with excellent sound quality, tons of streaming-media options, 3D compatibility, and wireless rear speakers. The lack of HDMI inputs is the only big omission.
Sony's HT-CT150 sound bar home theater system sounds great and is way ahead of the competition with its three HDMI inputs; however, its IR receiver limits the subwoofer's placement options.
The Samsung HT-C6500 combines outstanding sound quality, Blu-ray playback, and tons of features into an excellent home theater system, with only some design quirks holding it back.
Enjoy a movie theater experience in your own home with HDTV and a 5.1 sound system.
Highly detailed sound is the key strength of Boston Acoustics' CS2310 system, but it lacks the muscle to make home theater come alive.
Sony's single-speaker surround-sound home theater system is sleek, relatively inexpensive, and actually sounds pretty good.
Mirage's gorgeous Nanosat 5.1 Home Theater System may be small, but it produces a huge, room-filling sound for music and movies.
Samsung HW-C450 Review
The good: Sound bar home theater system; very thin design; wireless subwoofer; surprisingly solid sound quality on movies, given its size; three inputs (two optical, one minijack); simple setup; useful "smart volume" control.
The bad: No HDMI connectivity; sounds lackluster with music; faux-surround effects are mild.
The bottom line: The Samsung HW-C450 is an exceedingly thin sound bar home theater system that sounds surprisingly good with movies, but lacks HDMI connectivity.
