>> Hi, I'm Kent German, senior editor here at CNET.com. Today we're going to take a first look at the Samsung Q, also called the SCHR500. This is a new phone for Alltel service. I've been saving the Alltel phone for a little while, but this does bring a bit of much needed style to their lineup. I do like the red coloring here on this side, red and silver, this is a nice color combination. Also, like the slim profile, clean lines. So attractive phone overall. Vertical display is also unique at least to Alltel. We've seen this kind of display in cell phones a few times before. But it's still not that common. You just tilt it on the side, you can see that it shows daytime, caller ID, all of that information. Of course it won't show photo caller ID and it won't work as a view finder for the camera, but that's just fine, because you do have a self portrait lens right here for the camera just above. Of course, there is no flash, so it's a little trouble taking pictures in dim conditions. On this side, you have the volume rocker. We have the charger port, which is also the headset jack, so you can't use both at once. Here on this side you have micro SD slot and a camera shutter. Open up the phone, do see we have a thin profile, kind of has a large thing down here. We, it's very similar to the Razor which is called the double chin. So just, want to be aware of that. But still makes the phone have a slim profile. Inside, nice internal display, pretty bright and colorful. There's a tiny bit overly bright and we could adjust the brightness, but overall it was fine. Also, like the stereo speakers right here, great location, makes you hear the music well, you can talk on the speakerphone. So really, like that location much better than on the back. Keypad buttons and navigation array, similar to other Samsungs we've seen. Very flat with the surface of the phone. Keypad navigation around here was especially slippery, so took us a little while just to get used to that. The toggle has a little bit of definition. There's an okay button in the middle but slightly raised. Then you have two soft keys, dedicated speakerphone button, a voice-channeling button, talk, and end power keys. Keypad buttons were also a bit slippery, also completely flat, not a lot of texture there. But the numbers are pretty large, backlighting is fine too. Phone does have Bluetooth or speakerphone, pretty nice MP3 player that has some more features than we expected, alga mark, things like that. Not enough to replace your MP3 player, though, right now. I'm Kent German and this is a Samsung Q for Alltel. ^M00:02:09 [ Music ]
