>> Hi, I'm Ken Sherman, senior editor here at cnet.com. Today we're going to take a first look at the Samsung Gleam, also called the SCH U700. This is an over icon wireless phone. Samsung's really fond lately of naming their phones a lot of different nicknames. Most of them I don't understand, but I can say the Gleam, I can see why they call it that. It does have some gold-plating on the side, and even the front is very shiny and reflective. So the phone actually does gleam when you get it in the right light. I thought it was kind of fashionable. Some people might think it's a little too showy. The phone also comes in a blue color which is a little more subdued as well. Overall, though, we have a pretty standard flip design, it's a little taller than most phones. But it is thin. Found the external display a little small for the phone's overall size. Felt it could be bigger. It is color though, so it supports photo color I.D. and works as a viewfinder for self-portraits. You can see the camera lens just above. Doesn't come with a flash. [Inaudible] camera, so we really expect those on high resolution cameras like this. That was a little disappointing. Also have a couple speakers down here on the bottom. Great place for twin speakers. A lot better than on the back, because the sound faces toward you which is nice. Also we have some external music controls. Here on the side we have a volume rocker, we have a camera shutter key, we also have jacks for the head set and the charger. These are separated, which is nice, so you can use both at the same time. Open up the phone. Inside you have a really nice internal display. Really bright and colorful, big kind of car theme to the phone. You can see -- it's called living wallpaper. Wasn't sure what that was when I first heard about it, but I actually during the day you can see that it's bright. When you get tonight, it actually changes tonight scenes. Also the menu has sort of a car theme as well, but you can change it. But it doesn't make any -- [Inaudible] system easier to understand, unfortunately. Moving down to the navigation keys. These are flat against the surface of the phone, as are the [Inaudible] keys, didn't find them that hard to use, actually, didn't have any misdials, even though the slightest bit slick. Only thing I didn't like is the numbers. They actually blend into the color of the phone. So if you have visual impairments, it might be hard to seat numbers. They're only really easy to see when you have the backlighting lit. I'm Ken Sherman, this is Samsung Gleam SCH U700. ^M00:02:00 [ Music ]

Samsung Gleam SCH-U700 - gold (Verizon Wireless) Review
The good: The Samsung Gleam SCH-U700 has an attractive design, a gorgeous internal display, and solid set of features. Call and music quality are good, too.
The bad: The Samsung Gleam SCH-U700 suffers from average photo and video quality. Also, the speakerphone and voice dialing don't fare well in noisy environments.
The bottom line: If you're looking for a cell phone that is fashionable and has good call quality, the Samsung Gleam SCH-U700 is a solid bet. Video playback isn't so hot, but it's a decent phone on the whole.
