Samsung's Galaxy S II on Boost Mobile still stacks up well Video Transcript
Hi. This is Brian Bennett for CNET.com. And today, we're taking our first look at the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G. This handset costs $369.99 and is now available on Boost Mobile without a contract. If you think you've seen this device before, well, chances are you have. This phone is essentially the same legendary Samsung Galaxy S II, launched over a year ago. It's virtually identical to the Samsung epic 4G Touch for Sprint. There's one big difference though. That is this device comes loaded with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and not the older Android 2.3 Gingerbread software which the previous flavors of the GS2 ran. Other features remain the same but that's a good thing. The phone has a big 4.5-inch Super AMOLED screen which isn't the sharpest out but still packs vivid colors with lots of contrasts. Powering the phone is a 1.2 GHz dual-core Exynos processor, which keeps things moving smoothly. The Galaxy S II's 8-megapixel camera can also still hold its own. Snapping pictures quickly and with great image quality. The phone can connect to the Boost Mobile 4G network but it's actually Sprint's outdated Wimax system. So don't expect LTE caliber speed. Above the screen is a 2-megapixel front facing camera and notification light. Below it are buttons for Android functions. The right side holds a tiny power button while volume controls sit on the left. On top is the 3.5 millimeter headphone Jack and around back is the phone's 8-megapixel camera with LED flash. The good: The Samsung Galaxy S II 4G sports a large and vivid 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. Powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, the phone also runs Android 4.0 and is 4G-capable. Camera quality is also excellent.
The bad: Call quality could be better. The device is large and has a plasticky build.
The bottom line: Despite its age, the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G offers solid performance, a vibrant screen, and a great multimedia experience, which makes it the top dog on Boost Mobile.
