>> Hi. I'm Matthew Moskovciak, senior associate editor at CNET.com, and this is the Samsung BD-P1600. This is an entry level Blu-ray player from Samsung, and when you first take a look at it, you may be wondering where the disc tray is. That's because it's actually hidden beneath the flip down door on the front panel that takes up the entire length of it. Now, we weren't exactly fans of this design for a couple of reasons. First is it obscures the controls on the front panel, and also, if you have a USB stick in the USB port, you're gonna be looking at the rather unattractive design while the flip door is down all the time. It has all the features that we've come to expect on Blu-ray players now, including profile 2.0 compatibility and onboard decoding for Dolby true HD and DTS HD master audio. It also has a couple of nice value-added features, such as NetFlix and Pandora streaming, both of which we're fans of the services. Now, you can access these online features using the Ethernet port on the back, but the BD-P1600 is also Wi-Fi ready, so you're able to purchase a Wi-Fi adaptor from Samsung, and that'll enable wireless access for the player. Also around back, you'll see the Ethernet port, and there's also an HDMI output and component video. There's another USB port on the back, and as we mentioned before, there's one on the front. In terms of performance, the BD-P1600 offers excellent image quality on Blu-ray discs, and it does a pretty good job upscaling your standard DVDs. One thing we will point out is that the BD-P1600 is fast at loading discs, unlike a lot of older Blu-ray players. It loads discs almost as quickly as a PS3, and the operational speed, skipping between chapters and moving around the menus, is pretty quick as well. Overall, we were really impressed with the value that the BDP 1600 offered in terms of its extra features and performance. The only thing you'll have to get by is the annoying flip down tray. I'm Matthew Moskovciak at CNET.com, and this is the Samsung BD-P1600. ^M00:02:02 [ Music ]

The good: Excellent image quality on Blu-ray movies; Netflix and Pandora streaming; speedy load times and operational speed; Profile 2.0 compliant; onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio; Wi-Fi compatible, with purchase of USB dongle.

The bad: Design marred by an annoying flip-down panel; Wi-Fi dongle is very expensive.

The bottom line: The Samsung BD-P1600 has a great mix of features and performance for a standalone Blu-ray player, with only its annoying design holding it back.
