Safari 4 beta for Windows Video Transcript

>> Seth: Stuck somewhere between browsing curiosity and useful tool for Windows based iPhone programmers Apple's Safari browser for PC's is still the third most popular browser for Windows' users. Hi, I'm Seth Rosenblatt [assumed spelling] for CNETDownload.com and in this first look video we're offering both a raised eyebrow and a hardy welcome to the new Safari. Some of the improvements are long overdue. the first thing to catch your eye will probably be the new interface cribbed heavily from Google Chrome. Not that that's a bad thing as browsers have always borrowed ideas from each other. The Safari's [inaudible] comes complete with a more Windows-friendly design, the ability to rip tabs off into new Windows and a tabs on top layout. Tabs however are not the star of Safari 4 Cover Flow has been ported over from iTunes and Apple has taken the thumbnail preview page and blown it up with top sites. Top sites shows your most frequently visited websites a smart change from the most recently visited concept. Thumbnails are now presented against a black background with the URL and site name at the bottom. Click the Edit button on the left to remove a site from the list pin it to the top site view or change the size of the thumbnails to see more sites. Searching your history is possible directly from the top site screen too and those familiar with Cover Flow should feel right at home. Move the slider to see the thumbnails of your history or bookmarks, an update star will appear on sites that have been updated since you last viewed them. Safari 4 is not all graphics improvements the new Java script engine Nitro makes Safari one of the fastest browsers on the web and it's the second browser to score 100 on the Acid 3 Web Standards' test. There are some noticeable problems with the Beta beyond its Betaness [phonetic] there's no searching available from the URL bar which is something that all other major browsers now have, there's no support for extensions and that's a deal killer for many. Worst of all Windows users if you don't have a new enough graphics card you won't even see any of the new graphics, no Cover Flow for you. Whether you love Safari's speed and visual tweaks or whether you'd rather communicate via smoke signal all this browser competition means us and users win. With you first look at Safari 4 Beta I'm Seth Rosenblatt for Download.com. ^M00:02:18 [ Music ]
