"Real Gone" is the unpredictable follow-up to the atmospheric and conceptual "Alice "and "Blood Money," two albums that TOM WAITS released simultaneously in the spring of 2002.
In an exciting departure from the critically acclaimed Alice and Blood Money, Waits? fevered imagination has spawned a new musical hybrid, grafting together worlds both sonic and ethnic from musical traditions both old and new. The 15 track CD features: primal blues, Jamaican rock-steady grooves, rhythms and melodies both African and Latin, what Waits calls ?cubist funk.?
In that sonic cubism, Waits ingeniously finds common ground with hip hop?s cut and paste aesthetic and incorporates some of its elements into his approach. Many of the tracks on Real Gone were built on Waits? ?human beatboxing? on a cassette recorder in his bathroom and bringing those tapes into the studio to have the band play over them. As a result, there are no drums on many of the most driving tracks as his voice provides all of the necessary propulsions. And for the first time, there is no piano.

Her debut album ?Eye To The Telescope? is the creative consequence of that inquiring imagination. ?My songs examine and explore little specific emotions or situations or stories,? she explains. ?They?re kitchen table songs, like a conversation between me and one other person. It?s almost like an alien has been sent to get emotional samples from human beings and put it all together on a record.? Since completing ?Eye To The Telescope?, life has been a blur of gigs, first as support to Joss Stone, then a tour of Europe, singing with ?klezmer hip-hop? band Oi Va Voi, who ignited the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury. ?It was blazing sunshine and I went on in a turquoise neck muff, glamorous dress and muddy boots and just had the best gig, really emotional. k-os' socially aware raps and heartfelt melodies captured the imagination of the widest range of music fans and critics on his debut "Exit." So what does he do for an encore? On first listen, it might be easy to aesthetically file away the Long Island boys of Edison Glass - after all, there's more than enough post-hardcore texture and At The Drive In flailing to go around on February 5th's Time is Fiction. But attempting to pigeon-hole this NY quartet is a lost cause. Spend time with these songs and their twists and turns take on vibrant, new life, teeming with hi-hat dances, dueling vocals, gang choruses, and some of the finest melodies any band laboring away on "punk-inspired melodic rock" has been able to muster. All of this is just to say that Fuse can't hold Edison Glass, people. They're simply destined for more ears than that.
