Reasons NOT to buy the new iPad Video Transcript
The new iPad is setting some kind of sales record like most new things from Apple do. #5 Price. The price hasnt gone up, but it hasnt gone down either. The iPad is the most expensive tablet per gigabyte on CNETs current list of 5 best tablets, largely because Apple brooks no discounting. You may also find the snap-fit case from your iPad 2 doesnt fit...and that you need to buy a more expensive iPad than you had in mind because the new retine screen has begun a mass conversion to fatter apps and hefti HD movies on iTunes. More on that in a moment. ( #4 Its heavier and thicker. OK, that last one may seem sort of petty since it only went from .34 to .37 inches thick, but thats enough for some snap-fit rigid cases from your iPad 2 to not fit. Also, the weight climbed almost 2 ounces. Both those specs are going the wrong way in a device that already got some knocks for feeling heavy in the hand. #3 The Retina display is twice the resolution, but not twice the quality. Just like doubling a cameras megapixels doesnt make your photos twice as good, our TV dude, David Katzmaier found that the double screen res on the new iPad make for an improvement in video that ranged from subtle to non-existent. Icons and text are look a lot better, but for video this wont be like when you got your first HDTV. #2 Its still got one main port doing a lot of things, and one of those things is making you spend money on adapters. USB, HDMI, SD card or VGA? Those all require an adapter...or two...or three. More to buy, more lose and have to buy again. Been there. Before we get to #1 reason NOT not to buy the new iPad, the two features that are probably the least trumpeted about it: First, the Verizon 4G model is the first iPad that is also a wi-fi hotspot, powered by that fast 4G connection. That means you can really tether a few devices off it at once and have enough bandwidth to go around. And, second, its the first tablet with Bluetooth 4.0 which is fast enough to stream video, can use extremely low power and can work with a host of devices that the Bluetooth folks tells us will never have pairing headaches. http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/ #1 You have an iPad 2. This didnt stop Apple from selling 3 million new iPads in its first three days, but one survey indicated a lot of those people didnt have an iPad at all. If you already have an iPad 2 its lighter, a little thinner, is just as fast on Wi-Fi, has a display that I never heard anyone complain about -- until now -- is no more port-challenged than the new iPad and the case you have for it still fits. For all our iPad coverage, little known details and how to guides, check out the dedicated iPad section at CNET.com. Im Brian Cooley, thanks for watching.
