Quick Tips: Using Selective Focus Video Transcript

>> I'm Brian Cooley with a quick tip on taking better photos with your digital camera, this time using selective focus. That's a fancy term for telling the camera exactly what to focus on. Every have that frustration where you're taking a picture of somebody, and the camera focuses on the wall behind them, or something in front of them? That's because it wasn't sure what you were going for. Here's a way to make sure that it does. In this example Catherine's right in front of our corporate obelisk here at headquarters, and if I want to get a picture of her and she's over to the left, and I aim right down the middle, the camera wants to expose and focus for that white carved in area, and it's not quite right. Instead, I aim right at her, I press the button halfway down to get exposure and focus, now I reset the composition to put her to the left where I want her, and then bang, fire the picture. Great illumination with her being focused and exposed right at the expense of the sign that I don't care so much about. What's happened is the camera knew the whole time what you wanted the focus and exposure set for, even as you move the camera around a little bit after you press the button halfway. This is a great technique that'll give you better photos in a variety of situations, and all you have to do is use a familiar button you already know, just press it halfway first. Now go out and take some better photos with composition, focus, and exposure exactly the say you want, by mastering selective focus. ^M00:01:23 [ music ]
