>> Daaaag... Internet Explorer set as the default browser again. I hate that. Ever get in a war over default settings on a shared Windows computer? I'm Tom Merritt, Editor from CNET.com. Here's a quick tip for tying browser and mail apps settings to your Windows user accounts, so nobody else can mess with them. Thanks to Rick from Queens for sending me a link to two handy apps: Default Browser and Default Mail. Both are made by Ramesh Srinivasan, to whom I apologize for probably butchering his name. First, download the apps. Go to windowsxp.mvps.org slash defaultbrowser.htm for Default Browser. Then go to windowsxp.mvps.org slash defaultmail.htm for Default Mail. Download them both and extract the zip files. Then double-click to start the program. In Default Browser, just choose your browser and press Apply. If your browser isn't on the list, you can browse to find it. Default Mail lists the clients you've got installed on your computer. Just select the one you want to be the default. Make sure Set As Default Client is checked. Check Register with Start Menu if you want the start menu's email option to default to the same program, then press Apply. Now, if another user logs on and changes the default browser and email, it won't change it when you log on. This is s free program, but that means that it's unwarranted, so you have to provide your own support on it, but if you do like it, why not drop a couple of coins in Ramesh's Pay Pal account. During installation, you have to be careful if you don't want to set JetAudio Basic as the default application for audio and video files. However, the freeware application gives you plenty of reasons to make it your only player. The interface has a modern design that looks like an equalizer. You can customize each section of the program, from CD ripping to format conversion, to your heart's content. The program can convert files among some 10 formats, as well as read and edit MP3 tags. The built-in Cross-fader, Reverb, and Wide-sound modes provide a nice touch not found in most MP3 players. The program becomes truly unique with its clock, however, which features a timer and an alarm. We also appreciate the inclusion of a tool for seeking out song lyrics. Our only quibble is it treats a playlist as an album but uses the artist as its primary key field, making it difficult to locate mixes. JetAudio Basic's appealing product set should attract audiophiles.

Expected for release later this year, Microsoft XP Service Pack 2 focuses on three areas of security: default firewall, automatic update and scanning for current virus protection. At CeBit America in New York, Microsoft's Greg Sullivan tells ZDNet's David Berlind that while SP2 is a security improvement for Windows, it's just the first step in a continual fight against network threats.
