>> Hi I'm Molly Wood for cnet.com and I'm here with a quick tip for how to create a self-extracting archive with WinZip. Hot stuff right? No seriously now you might think that only a program publisher would need to create a self-extracting exe but these actually come in really handy if you want to send say, 100 photos of your new baby to the new grandparents. This way they don't have to learn how to use WinZip. They just double click and all the photos unzip automatically ready for viewing. Here's how to do it. Let's say you've already zipped up your photos here; now open up this zip file in WinZip and now hit shift K or go to actions and select make an exe file. Now if you're using an evaluation copy of WinZip you'll be reminded several times not to distribute files illegally. You also be asked if you want to test the self-extraction which the program does without extracting the files onto your desktop. Click through that as well and then your exe files should appear in the same folder as your zip. From there you can use WinZip's contacts menu options to e-mail the archive with just one click. And that my friends is why little old WinZip remains one of the most popular archiving programs out there. For cnet.com I'm Molly Wood. ^M00:01:08 [ Music ] ^M00:01:09

The reigning top dog of the utility world gets some nice behind-the-scenes improvements while maintaining the familiar usability and interface that we've come to trust. WinZip is still king at creating ZIP archives, and this new version expands its kingdom on a number of fronts. New features include AES 128- and 256-bit encryption for tighter security, an improved compression algorithm that gives you better compression ratios, and new technologies that remove the size restrictions on ZIP archives. Other handy features include a user-friendly zipping wizard, a split archive function that converts even very large ZIP files into manageable sizes for easier e-mailing, span-disk capability for complete backups, integration with virus-protection software, and the ability to drop whole programs into one self-extracting archive.
WinRAR is a 32-bit Windows version of RAR Archiver, an archiver and archive manager. RAR files can usually compress content by 8 percent to 15 percent more than ZIP files can. WinRAR's main features include strong general and multimedia compression, the ability to process non-RAR archive formats, ZIP compression and decompression, support for long filenames, programmable self-extracting archives (SFX), repair of damaged archives, authenticity verification, embedded file comments, and encryption. Unicode is supported in archive filenames, allowing non-English filenames to be handled painlessly. You can manipulate the parameters of many archives at once and view a volume sequence as a single archive. WinRAR can convert other archive formats to RAR and search for specified text and files in archives. WinRAR 3.5 supports interface themes and Windows x64 context menus.

Turns out those terrahertz scanners in the airports are mostly safe, but they do a little unzipping of your DNA. Derek says it's nothing to worry about. You won't grow a third arm in the airport. Even if it would be handy in carrying baggage. We also find out email isn't private. Did we need the courts to tel us that? And Facebook gets $711 million it will never see.
WinZip is the original and most popular of all Windows Zip file utilities. Both the wizard and classic interfaces can accommodate first-time and experienced users.
WinZip 9.0 is the easiest-to-use and most powerful compression program available. No PC should be without WinZip.

We found tons of little gizmos that either brought us thoughts of "awww cute" or thoughts of "awww really?" Also, man babies and sticky mats. What, you really want me to explain that in further detail? Really?

Ep. 1010: Who loves the show? Metrologists
On today's show, we discover that Microsoft is a fine American company that thinks nothing of shafting its highest-paying users or subjecting the entire Internet to multiple episodes of projectile vomiting. And Apple shouldn't be forced by some pissy little upstart to change its perfectly legitimate EULA. And don't even get Cooley STARTED on sending self-replicating nanobots to Mars. Good times all around. Plus: Metrologists!
