>> Hi I'm Tom Merritt from CNET.com. Here's a quick tip for putting files on the Amazon Kindle using the included USB cable. This is the preferred way to put MP3s on the Kindle so you can listen while you read. You can also use it to put text files. And by text, I mean dot txt files. So for instance you could go to the Guttenberg project, get some free public domain books to read on there, maybe write up some notes for a speech and review them. But it won't do Word documents. In fact, it bears showing the only files you can drag on the Kindle via USB and have work, here they are. AZW is the Kindle store format. So you buy one from the store, it works. Moby and PRC are e-book formats, though they can't have any DRM on them or they aren't gonna work on the Kindle. All right, let's get started. Plug the USB cable into the computer and the Kindle. A screen on the Kindle will alert you that it's connected. On an Apple the Kindle will show up as a drive in the finder. On a PC go to My Computer, click on Kindle, then open the appropriate folder. You can drag MP3 files into the music folder, and drag text files into the documents folder, and so on. When you're done, check that the activity indicator isn't flashing, then unplug the Kindle. Your documents should show up on the home page, music will be in the experimental section. You can also use this function to drag text files of your clippings off the Kindle onto your computer.
