>> If you want to use Yahoo! messenger for your IM needs, stop! If you just install it, it'll try to take over your home page, put it in a task bar, date your sister, who knows? All kinds of annoying behavior. I'm Tom Merritt for CNET.com with a quick tip for installing a nice clean well behaved version of Yahoo! messenger. Now I'll assume you've already downloaded it and have the install running. First choose custom install. This will give you full control over what happens. See all these new checkmarks that showed up? They try to sneak those past you. My advice? Uncheck them all. You don't need any of that stuff if all you want to do is IM. Now you can go ahead and install the program and it won't change your home page to Yahoo! or install other extraneous software. There is one other annoying behavior, auto start. Some people like Yahoo! messenger to automatically start every time they start Windows, I don't. Here's how to turn it off. Go to messenger, choose preferences. Uncheck automatically start Yahoo! messenger. Press okay. Now you have an instant messenger that just sends messages. If you really want full control, try Pigeon or Trillion. They give you access to multiple IM accounts in one piece of software that doesn't try to slip things by you. That's it for this quick tip. I'm Tom Merritt for CNET.com. ^M00:01:17
