The Presets: "Are You the One?"
The Presets are an electro duo from down under that sound like suicide and the faint with just enough David Byrne/Talking Heads to make them strangely intimate. They are on the Modular label (who released the Avalanches). Their album, "Beams," will be out April 18th. "Drifting through twisting drum patterns and rolling, atmospheric blips, "Beams" paints a broad brush stroke, where simple deliveries meet sleazy electro and floor-stompers." - Rolling Stone Australia.
The longer versions of these tracks, featuring Jack DeJohnette and Foday Musa Suso will be available on the album by "The Ripple Effect" :"Hybrids" released October 4th 2005 on Jack's label "Golden Beams Productions".
The Project: The Ripple Effect was conceived of as a project to blend some of the elements of modern electronica/dance music with previously recorded music by Jack DeJohnette and some of his collaborators. All of the music on this album was taken from multitrack recordings. Some elements were added, sometimes overdubbed and edited, while other parts were omitted. The structure and composition were altered, but the musicality was retained. While staying true to the original?s feel, a new piece of music was created.
We believe this hybridization of styles is a part of the natural developmental flow of music. Enjoy.
The Artists: As a leader, composer and drummer, Jack DeJohnette has supported some of the most important and innovative musicians of our time, including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Carlos Santana, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. Widely regarded as one of jazz music?s greatest drummers, DeJohnette?s playing has long drawn on sources beyond "jazz." Foday Musa Suso is an internationally recognized kora (West African 21-stringed harp lute) virtuoso and a Mandingo griot.Born in The Gambia, Suso grew up in a society where griots function as walking libraries, singing their stories for the community while providing history, wisdom and entertainment. Suso has performed and recorded worldwide with many prominent musicians including Herbie Hancock, Philip Glass, Pharoah Sanders, Ginger Baker and Bill Laswell. Composer/multi-instrumentalist John Surman is one of the key figures in a generation of European musicians who have crucially expanded the international horizons of jazz. He is acknowledged as an improvisor of world class, and composer of a body of work which extends far beyond the normal range of the jazz repertoire. Remixer/Musician Ben Surman is involved with electronica projects including Third Zomby and Mind over Rhythm. He is also currently working on remixes for Karin Krog, Colin Walcott and various other artists. As an engineer he has worked with many artists including Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Dave Holland, Hermeto Pascoal and Jim Hall.
Marlui Miranda is the most acclaimed and recognized performer and researcher on music from the Brazilian Indians. She has interpreted and adapted traditional chants and songs from many Brazilian Indian nations. Miranda worked with Hector Babenco in the film At Play in the Fields of the Lord. She is a recipient of several grants including a Guggenheim and the Cultural Merit Medal and has recorded and performed with leading Brazilian musicians including Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Egberto Gismonti and Nana Vasconcelos.
Producer/Engineer Big Al is best known for his work with various projects including Mind Over Rhythm, Clone Theory and Clip. His recording studio "The Sonic Kitchen" is responsible for some of the highest quality electronica and dance music to come out of the UK in the past 15 years including work with Plaid, The Black Dog, John Holt, Youth, Dennis Bovell and Zomba Records.

all natural and cut to the quick...In the Botanic Gardens behind the Sydney Conservatorium of Music stands a tall thicket of bamboo (Bambusa spp.) whose stems have been graffiti'd ten times o'er by louts and lovers, local and alien. mBu is my little elegy, both musically and visually, to this amusing copse of brave but wounded wildlife. The soundtrack was created by tapping, blowing on, scraping, or dropping lengths of bamboo, and recording bambooming groans when wind sighed through the grove and thrummed its trunks. No environmentalist statement is intended or implied. mBu is an assemblage of still and moving images of the grove, in which I leave the graffitists' gougings, and the exquisite shades and textures of these grand grasses, to speak for themselves.
The Presets: "Girl and the Sea"
With enough range that they'll appeal to fans of class acts like Nine Inch Nails, The Faint, Soft Cell, and Daft Punk, The Presets' sound is equal parts invention and dance-floor friendliness while retaining a special flavor of their own.
Squeezeman pops out of a plasticine egg, toothpick in hand, ready to deal with any eventuality in his tiny, shiny plasticine world... except something that no small, squeezy man could ever have expected. 'Squeezemen' is a fun piece, made by Annie and Stephen Gard, who are not a husband and wife team, but cousins. The soundtrack was created from sampled sounds of Annie playing her violin; Annie also made the characters and moved them about the set; Stephen shot each still with a digital camera, and edited the sound and video. Annie also did some editing - the whole project was an experimental, 'holiday' project. Annie Gard is a student at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School; Stephen Gard is a composer and video artist.

Dub Trio: "Casting Out the Nines [Live]"
TThree distinct personalities functioning as one unit, Dub Trio seems capable of making all manner of sounds. The three gentlemen collectively known as Dub Trio bring noises into this world that are unique, decidedly new and fresh. Drawing on music at large, rather than forcing a marriage of two things that were never quite divorced, they bring an eclectic and attractive take on the term "new music." Primarily just drums, bass, and guitar, but the "job description" for each member varies from track to track. Staying away from overtly clich?d genre restrictions, Dub Trio is free to bring you to the dance floor, to tears or at least give you a peek at the three minds at work. The drums function as a section, rather than as one instrument in the hands of Joe Tomino. You will hear this section transform over the course of a record or live show, the pulse never wavering yet morphing into drum machine-esque sounds, then suddenly, to big rock drums assault. The inspired moment to moment decisions acting as a foil to the three way cat and mouse game that the band brings nightly to the stage. The bass is the foundation. Stu Brooks delivers low end like it is a weapon. One moment like a telephone pole swinging towards your gut and the next moment a playful rump shaking pulse locked in with Joe as they let it roll. The bass also changes faces many times in a performance, but never loses the pocket. Amazing that "feel" is measured in milliseconds when Stu is at the controls of a big oceanic sound. The guitar in Dub Trio, played by DP Holmes, always seems to be the device for cueing a response in the listener. Dave makes shapes, colors and devices for emotional control one moment, then is careening down the highway at 120 mph in a rusty Chevy Nova the next. The medium becomes the message when the distortion kicks in. Aggressive, dreamy, liquid and solid. There is a command of the elements in the guitar section. With this second record, New Heavy, Dub Trio shows us a more aggressive side of life. Special guest vocalist Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Ipecac Recordings) lends his voice to "Not Alone," the album?s standout hit. Heavy, moody, melancholy music at its best. This is a record to be enjoyed LOUD!
