>> Hi, I'm Kevin Massy from CNET Car Tech and today we're taking a first look at the Pioneer Avic-D3. This is a doubled in, in dash car stereo with navigation and multimedia capabilities. As you can see we've got it set up on navigation mode. The maps are very bright and colorful. When programming a destination into the Pioneer Avic-D3 a simple press of the menu button brings up a variety of means of entering your chosen destination. You can search by address, you can search by point of interest, you can search by telephone number and you can search by destination history and address book. The major downfall of the Pioneer Avic-D3, in my opinion, is its ability to only hold one CD or DVD at one time. It has a single disc slot above the map. With the destination entered and saved to the internal memory you can remove the DVD-ROM, which means that the route that you entered and only that route can be accessed. If you want to put in a new route, if you want to detour on your existing route or if you just want to browse the map you can't do it without putting the map disc back in, which is a real pain. Okay, let's switch to media. The Pioneer Avic-D3 can be used to play all kinds of disc based media. You can play mp3, WMA digital audio discs, you can play CD's, you can play DVD video. And the system also comes standard with an iPod dock connector with an iPod connected you get the iconic iPod wheel control design on the right hand side of the screen. The wheel can only be used to search through individual tracks. You can search through track lists by just holding down the scrolling search bar. Although one thing we did notice is when scrolling through in that way you don't get the names showing up in the list. You just have to guess where in the alphabetical list of songs on your iPod you are. I've ruled the Pioneer Avic-D3 is an impressively equipped entry level multimedia and GPS navigation device. It's major downfall, as we've said, is its single disc slot. Pioneer Avic-D3 is on sale now with a price tag of between 900 and 1000 dollars. I'm Kevin Massy and today we've had a first look at the Pioneer Avic-D3. ^M00:02:25 [ Music ]

Pioneer Avic-D3 Review

The good: The Pioneer Avic-D3 combines a user-friendly navigation programming interface with real-time traffic capability and a range of media options, including a standard iPod connector.

The bad: The system's single disc slot means that users will constantly have to switch between navigation discs and media sources to make the most of its many features.

The bottom line: The impressively equipped Pioneer Avic-D3 offers an array of advanced navigation and media playback functions, but the system's poor hardware design limits its usability.
