>> Hi, I'm Jasmine France, associate editor of visual audio here at CNET.com. And I have today the Phillips PMC. This is a 30 gigabyte portable media center, which is basically like a fancy word for a video player. All that that means is that it has the Windows Media Center interface on here. And if you use Windows Media Center at all, you'll probably be very familiar with the way this is set up. This one looks a little bit different than some of the ones we've seen in the past. It's more square this way than rectangular. And it has two sets of controls here as well as the you know standard Windows Media button that always takes you back to the top menu. Menus are really easy to navigate, as is the case with Media Center. That's one of the really big pluses. It's really easy to use. The buttons here, at first I found it a little bit hard to activate the center button, but I think that just might have been getting used to it. Now I'm finding it a lot easier I'm happy to report. This PCM also records video, which is pretty unusual. I don't think I've seen a portable media center in the past that records video. And it even comes with a cable which is this cable here. You can just plug it right into your AV outs on your TV or cable box or even a DVD player. This only comes in 30 gigabytes and it's pretty pricy for a PVP. You're going to pay 350 dollars, but you get a lot in the box. Usually when you add that on to like an Arcos player, it'll cost you an extra 50 dollars anyways. So if you consider all those things, it might be a good deal for you. There is a speaker on the front here, so if you don't have ear buds, you can listen to it that way. It's also pretty good for sharing. The viewing angle is, is decent on this. You could definitely share it between two people. And for that, also you have this little kickstand on the back. The good: The Philips PMC offers an attractive design and a screen with excellent viewing angles. It's very easy to use and it includes video recording, as well as a built-in kickstand.
The bad: The Philips PMC's audio quality is subpar, it doesn't record from protected DVDs, and there's no way to adjust the recording volume levels on the device. It also costs about $50 more than most other 30GB portable A/V devices, and there's no FM radio.
The bottom line: The Philips Portable Media Center PMC7230 is a stylish device with lots of potential, but it's not as impressive as we expected.
