>> Hey I'm Donald Bell, Senior Editor for digital audio and MP3, and today we're taking a First Look at the Philips GoGear Spark MP3 Player. Now the Spark is a basic MP3 player that comes in a 2GB capacity for $49 and a 4GB capacity for $59. You don't get a lot of bells and whistles for the money, but the Spark does played MP3 and WMA files and includes a photo viewer, FM radio and a voice recorder. Now it isn't hard to find an MP3 player on $50 these days, but what makes the Spark unique is that it includes a 1.5-inch color screen. Most MP3 players in this price range only lets you shuffle through your music collection, so it's nice to see a $50 player, but you should be selective about what music you listen to and also offers album artwork and trickably EQ settings. The sides of the Spark include buttons for power and options button and volume control, but the main navigation controls are actually on the player it self, on the screen. By pinching any of the four edges you can scroll through menus, skip tracks and pause your music. It's an intuitive interface; however, it can't match a simple operation as something like the iPod Shuffle. The Spark sound quality is pretty good for the price and includes Philips full sound EQ preset, which really maximizes the audio quality you'll get out of the cheap earbuds that come bundled with. I'm Donald Bell and that was a First Look at the Philips GoGear Spark. ^M00:01:21 [ Music ]

Philips GoGear Spark (8GB) Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Philips GoGear Spark packs music, photos, radio, voice recording, long battery life, and a color screen into an affordable little package.

The bad: The GoGear Spark is light on format support, voice recordings are noisy, storage capacity is meager, and not everyone will appreciate its wearable design.

The bottom line: In the world of budget MP3 players, the Philips GoGear Spark is a diamond in the rough, offering an attractive balance of features, style, and usability.
