>> Hey everyone, I'm Jeff Backalar [assumed spelling], assistant editor here at cnet.com. Today we're gonna be looking at the Phillips DCP851. The 851 is a portable DVD player that offers an SD flash card reader slot, in addition to an iPod dock that can play your music and videos off your iPod. Now this is unlike most DVD players we've seen recently. There's no clamshell design, it's just got this tablet style form factor. Unfortunately though, it doesn't really protect the screen. And even in our couple days of testing we managed to scratch it up pretty good. Our biggest issue though is the fact that it only has a two point five hour battery. It's pretty weak, not too practical if you're on a long trip or something like that. However, they have included a car charger. DVD quality was just average with other players we've seen. There is a stand that it does allow you to prop up the player so you can view it without holding it in your hands. On the side you've got two headphone jacks, a video in and out port, in addition to the volume wheel and the SD card slot. Your iPod fits nice and snug, as they've included a couple iPod adapters to fit the various generations of iPods. Unfortunately with iPod video playback though, we found it to be pretty dark compared to DVD playback. We really like the navigation interface for the SD cards and iPods, it's very easy to use and understand. Another gripe we had was with the buttons on the player itself. They don't really work too well, so we're really gonna have to recommend using the remote that's included. Also, the Phillips will play Divx movie files, which we really liked, and in addition to MP3 and jpeg photo files. [ background music ] I'm Jeff Backalar, and this has been the Phillips DCP851. The good: Portable DVD player includes built-in iPod dock with video playback; 8.5-inch screen; DivX, MPEG4, JPEG, MP3 playback compatibility; SD flash card reader; good remote control; easy-to-use interface for digital media.

The bad: Short 2.5-hour battery life; tablet-style design leaves screen unprotected; washed-out screen; buttons aren't very responsive; battery is not user replaceable; iPod video playback is very dark.

The bottom line: The long list of features on the Philips DCP851--including the ability to play DVDs, digital media files, and iPod videos--is overshadowed by its mediocre picture quality and short battery life.
