This extremely expensive set includes a unique backlight, but its picture quality was the most pleasant surprise.

2007 Saturn Sky Red Line

The 2007 Saturn Sky Red Line is the ideal car for stalking in the urban jungle and attacking freeway on-ramps. Great performance and a head-turning body style outweigh its cramped cabin and low-tech interior.

Dell XPS m1330

Dell has finally put design first, with the head-turning XPS m1330. The laptop emphasizes both the "thin" and "light" aspects of the thin-and-light category, without sacrificing features or performance.

Lenovo ThinkVision L2440x

The Lenovo ThinkVision L2440x is a well-designed 24-inch LCD monitor that's great for movies and games, but the display (and its LED backlighting) is too expensive for the performance and features it supplies.

Philips 37PF9631D

With a built-in backlight, attractive looks, and a decent picture, the Philips 37PF9631D makes a case for spending a bit more.

Philips 42PF9631D

While we had some complaints about its picture quality, the Philips 42PF9631D's built-in backlight and sweet style will appeal to people who want something different.

JVC GR-D650

The budget-priced JVC GR-D650 performs surprisingly well for its class, in both bright and low light.

Philips Brilliance 200W6CB

The wide-screen Philips Brilliance 200W6CB display performs quite well and offers some useful extras (that will cost you extra), but other displays offer more flexibility in form and function.

NEC MultiSync LCD2180WG

Though the NEC MultiSync LCD2180WGLED features new LED backlight technology, we're unconvinced it's worth $6,700. Most professional users will be better served by other, less expensive LCDs.

Sony KDS-R60XBR1

By today's standards, the Sony KDS-R60XBR1 is expensive, but its fabulous performance and feature set make it well worth the price for early adopters.

Philips 32PF9996 Review

Editors' rating

The good: Decent black-level performance for an LCD; full 720p resolution; good out-of-box color temperature; attractive styling; Ambilight looks cool.

The bad: Expensive; nondefeatable edge enhancement; no 2:3 pull-down; limited input flexibility; 720p sources don't fill the screen; Ambilight adversely affects onscreen color perception.

The bottom line: This expensive LCD has a head-turning backlight, but it also performs surprisingly well.
