>> Hello, I'm Phil Ryan, Senior editor of CNET.com and we're taking a look at the Pentax K20D. The K20D is their current top of the line digital SLR. It's got a 14.2-megapixel CMOS sensor. It's the first Pentax SLR to have a CMOS sensor, all the rest have been CCD. The CMOS should let them have better control over noise and achieve higher ISO settings, so you can go up to ISO 6400 on the K20D. In the past they couldn't go that high. It also has sensor shift image stabilization, which means that any lens you put on here, you can use the image stabilization, which is really nice because the camera is compatible with Pentax's K-Series lenses, going all the way back, all the ones they've ever made. It's got a 2.7-inch LCD on the back. You can also set it to Live View mode. I liked the way that they let you enter the Live View mode. It's really just very quick, the On Off button, you just pull it and it enters Live View mode and then you can do that again and it comes out. They do make you press the Auto-focus button on the back of the camera, so that you can focus on Live View mode. They also built-in an enhanced Dynamic Range mode, which like some other manufacturer's modes lets you get a little bit more detail in the highlights and the shadows. The performance is quite nice. It's BD, that's better than some of the older Pentax SLR were. They have a nifty Sensitivity Priority mode in addition to the Aperture and Shutter Priority modes, which means that you can set the ISO of the camera and it will figure out the shutter speed and aperture that you need to get a good exposure at that sensitivity. It's a pretty good value for the money if you're looking for more than an entry level camera. It's really more of an advanced amateur camera, not quite pro level. So if that's what you're looking for, it deserved your attention. I'm Phil Ryan and this is the Pentax K20D. ^M00:02:18 [ Music ]

Though this snapshot camera has some admirable qualities, its poor performance and photo quality keep it from making the grade.
Speedy performance lifts the Pentax K2000 above the cheap-dSLR masses, but bad default settings make it an iffy choice for newbies.
Pentax K20D (body only) Review
The good: Impressive performance, 14 megapixels at a relatively low price; weather sealed; nice control layout; wireless flash control.
The bad: Slightly inaccurate colors; shake reduction could be more effective.
The bottom line: Pentax's 14MP K20D is a great choice for a midlevel SLR and offers a lot of bang for the buck.
