>> Hi, I'm Lori Grunin and this is the Pentax K10D. The K10D is priced like a budget digital SLR, but has a lot of features that you find in higher-end models. For instance, the body feels likes it's built like a little tank and has a lot of the dust and weatherproofing features that you find in higher-end models. It also has a lot of the dedicated controls that I like. For instance, Pentax puts the shake reduction, they use a mechanical sensor shift type of shake reduction. They put the control right on the body. It also has certain controls that we're not seeing a lot in digital SLR's of this price class. It maintains the two separate control wheels. The LCD is a bit small, especially given the new models are coming out with really large ones. But, it takes really nice photos. This is the kit lens, if you buy the kit, it comes with this 18 to 55 millimeter lens. The one small gotcha is that the performance is just average. It doesn't outshoot all of the models in its price class. But, if you're looking for a digital SLR, you don't have a commitment to any Cannon or Nikon lens, this is a really nice one to consider. The good: Excellent photo quality; well-designed and solidly built body; premium features for its price class; nice kit lens.
The bad: Occasional autofocus hunting; Shake Reduction only buys you a little over one stop.
The bottom line: A great feature set for the price, pro-level customization, and excellent photo quality make the Pentax K10D a bargain amateur dSLR. Only unremarkable performance holds it back from joining the pack leaders.
