Pantech Pocket Video Transcript
If you're looking for an Android smart phone than you can actually pick out of the line up, this one might be for you. I'm Jessica Dolcourt with CNET taking a first look at the Pantech Pocket for AT&T. The most interesting feature about this phone is actually its screen. Not because of the quality or anything but because of the unusual size and proportions. It's what's known as an SVGA or Super VGA screen. It is 4 inches in diameter but it also has this rarely seen 800 x 600 pixel resolution. The result is a phone with an unusual shape that's wider and shorter than you often see. I'm still trying to figure out exactly why it's called a pocket because it sure doesn't slip easily into mine, but it is about the size of a pocket so maybe that's it. Anyway, it does have this rubberized backing and even though it sometimes has an awkward size it feels a bit awkward to hold it a little bit wide. The backing does make it comfortable in the hand. I can't claim I'm a fan of the small round power button on the top though. There's a 5 megapixel camera on this phone with sharp really nice outdoor shots with lot of detail although there was a little bit of shutter lag while the auto focus was kicking in. However the lack of a flash means that indoor shots are less detailed and have much duller color. The Pocket runs Android 2.3 gingerbread and also has 4G HSPA plus speed on AT&T's network. It costs $49.99 with a new 2 year contract or $400 without a commitment. Overall I think the phone definitely delivers for the price on contract although a camera flash would make it much more versatile. I'm Jessica Dolcourt for CNET. Pantech Pocket (AT&T) Review
The good: An intriguing design, a helpful take on Android, and a reliable camera make the Pantech Pocket an interesting smartphone choice for AT&T. It also has 4G HSPA+ speeds.
The bad: No camera flash and poor video playback quality are black marks against the Pocket. Small controls don't do it any favors, either. Call quality could be better.
The bottom line: The Pantech Pocket dishes up a solid 4G Android Gingerbread experience at a wallet-friendly price, but the extra-wide frame, absent camera flash, and poor video playback quality could deter some folks.
