>> Hi there. I'm David Katzmaier, senior editor with CNET, and this is the Panasonic TC-P50X1. This is a 50-inch flat panel plasma TV. It's Panasonic's least expensive 50-inch plasma for 2009. That means it's not a 1080P model. This is a 720P plasma, but at the end of the day, it is really difficult to see the difference between 1080P and 720P at a 50-inch size unless you sit really close. This TV looks a lot like the other Panasonic plasmas on the market. It's got this glossy black frame around the edge here. Panasonic hid the speakers completely, so you can't really see any obvious speaker holes on this TV. The slanted stand here does not swivel, but it does match the glossy black of the television itself. There's kind of this silver strip accenting the bottom, but the rest is pretty much glossy black. Feature-wise, this TV doesn't really offer much, as you'd expect from an entry-level TV. There's not all that many picture adjustments. You can go into the menu and play with color, temperature, and couple of other really basic adjustments, but that's pretty much it. Connectivity on the back panel includes two HDMI inputs and two component video inputs, although there's no analog-style VGA input for computers. There's also a third HDMI input on the side panel. Picture on this TV was very good overall for an entry-level model. The best part about it was the black level performance. This TV does produce nice, deep, inky blacks. If you turn down the lights and watch a movie, you're really gonna be rewarded by those deep black levels. On the flip side, it does have relatively inaccurate color, especially the greens are a little too neon-y. And we also noticed an issue that we hadn't seen before on any TV. This was these kind of diagonal lines on the screen. They're relatively faint, but if you do notice them, they might be deal breaker. Despite some trade-offs in color fidelity, the HP PL4200N delivers a surprisingly solid picture with excellent blacks and plenty of punch.
Although it's not the best iPod-friendly TV we've tested, the Panasonic TC-LX1 provides a convenient, affordable gateway to access video and music based on your iPod or iPhone.

The good: Relatively inexpensive; excellent black-level performance; solid connectivity with three HDMI and two component-video inputs.
The bad: Inaccurate primary colors of green and red; faint diagonal lines visible in lighter areas; sparse picture controls; less efficient than similar LCDs.
The bottom line: Although it requires more than a few picture quality trade-offs, the Panasonic TC-P50X1 delivers the best black-levels-to-dollars ratio of any HDTV we've tested.
