>> Hi, I'm Matthew Moskovciak, assistant editor from CNET dot com and this is the Panasonic DMR EZ 47VK. This is a DVD recorder slash VCR combo unit so you can make a DVD copies of your VHS tapes or you can record from external sources using the Firewire input or the S video inputs. Around back, you can see the conductivity. There's an HDMI output which goes up to 10ADP, you can also see there's some other connections back here including a component video out and there's also an input in the back for S video or standard AV. The only thing on the front panel you have is a flip down panel where you have a card reader as well as a DV input. Now this is one of the first DVD recorders we've seen with a digital ATSE tuner. Overall that's pretty good because you can tune in to digital channels just by attaching an antennae but there are some limitations. For example, you can't get true high def output from the ATSE tuner using this unit. If you had an external ATSE tuner, you usually can get HDTV with it, but with this unit, you can't. Also obviously DVD?s can't record in HD so you won't be able to do that. DVD up scaling performance was pretty good although not as good as the best up scaling DVD players and for DVD recording, picture quality was excellent as well. Panasonic DVD recorders have an excellent LP mode, which means that you can record more material on a DVD and still have a pretty high level of picture quality. Overall, besides the ATSE limitations, this has pretty much everything we like to see in a DVD recorder VCR combo and we liked it a lot. I'm Matthew Moskovciak from CNET and this is the Panasonic DMR EZ 47VK. ^M00:01:55 [ Music ]

Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK Review

The good: The Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK records video to DVD or VHS; it has excellent recording quality, including an outstanding LP mode; HDMI output up to 1080p; good DVD upconversion; an SD card slot; flexible custom recording speed; DVD-RAM compatibility with the ability to edit; and a FireWire input.

The bad: Its ATSC tuner cannot deliver full HDTV resolution; no EPG or IR blaster to control other gear.

The bottom line: Despite a few ATSC limitations, the Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK delivers almost all the features and performance we look for in a DVD/VHS recorder.
