OWC Mercury On-The-Go Video Transcript

Hello! This is Dong Ngo, testing analyst for CNET.com, and today we'll take the first look at the biggest small external hard drive in the world, for the time being. And that is the OWC Mercury On-The-Go. Just the few months ago, laptop hard drives hit the 500GB mark and OWC is the first vendor that's come out with the external version of this new breed of hard drives. Aside from offering the top storage space, the Mercury also has a few interesting features. First, it has a transparent casing, showing off the internal hard drive and the circuit board inside. It also supports all data connections available for pocket-size external hard drives, including: USB2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800. The drive's layout is simple. On the back, it has 2 FireWire ports, one USB 2.0 Port, the on/of witch and the power port. The drive has no LED lights of its own but uses that of the internal hard drive, which can be seen through the casing. The drive is bus-powered meaning most of the time, you don't need to use the included power adapter. The data cable will also draw the juice from the computer to power the hard drive. The power adapter is necessary only when you use the device with the old computers, where the ports don't provide enough power. Overall, the Mercury On-The-Go is a simple plug and play external hard drive. It feels very sturdy and weight a little heavier than it looks. Also a little bit bulkier than you might think. This is because its seen-through casing creates some sort of illusion about its weight and actual size. Still, all in all, this is definitely a compact pocket-size external hard drive. In case you think it's not small enough for your pocket, it does come with a traveling pouch. For $350, which translates into about .7GB per dollar, the Mercury is not cheap but well worth it, especially considering the fact that it's presently the largest pocket-size external drive in terms of storage. Once again, my name is Dong Ngo and this has been the first look at the OWC Mercury On-The-Go external hard drive.
