>> Hi. I'm Matthew Muskovac, associate editor from CNET.com and this is the OPPO DV-983H. Now, this is an up-converting DVD player from OPPO, which is a company you may have not heard of. But over the last few years, they've established an excellent reputation for DVD players with great image quality. Now, if you look at the design on this, you'll notice that it's a little bit thicker and deeper than your standard slim-line DVD player that you may pick up from Wal-Mart for $60.00. One of the small nit-picks that we did have on this product is the remote. There's a lot of buttons on it, and they're cluttered together, which makes it a little bit hard to navigate by feel in a dark home theater. Now, as an up-converting DVD player, of course it plays DVDs, but it also plays some of the niche, high resolution audio discs, such as SACDs and DVD audio discs. Another thing you'll notice is that the connectivity on this device is excellent. If you look around back, there's an HDMI output, which can output DVDs up to 1080 P. There's also older connections such as component video, which is limited to 480 P, and S-video and composite. Some of the more interesting features are a USB 2.0 input so you can plug in a little flash drive and watch DivX movies or listen to MP3s. There's also 7.1 multi-channel analog outputs. If you have an older receiver that doesn't have HDMI, you can use this to get high-resolution audio from SACDs and DVD audio discs. Another thing you'll notice on the back panel is an RS-232 input, which will be great for anyone who has a custom-installed setup. Now, moving on to image quality. Image quality from this device was excellent. We looked at lots of test patterns and DVDs, and on lesser machines we would see things like jaggies or other kinds of artifacts. And we saw pretty much nothing from the DV-983H. Overall, this is one of the best standard def disc players that we've looked at. However, we do know that its high price is going to limit its appeal for most people and that budget video files can probably get a bang for their buck. Oppo DV-983H Review
The good: Excellent image quality on DVDs; can upscale to 1080p; plays DVD-Audio and SACD discs over HDMI output; 7.1 analog outputs; USB port for playing DivX, MP3 and JPEG files; excellent aspect-ratio controls and zooming; can be made region-free with a simple hack; also plays PAL discs.
The bad: Very expensive for a standard-definition disc player; remote is cluttered with buttons; Blu-ray discs look much better than DVDs.
The bottom line: The Oppo DV-983H is pretty much the ultimate standard-def disc player, but its high price means videophiles on a budget can get a better bang for their buck.
