>> Hi, I'm Matthew Moskovciak, assistant editor at CNET.com and this is the OPPO DV-981HD. Like other OPPO products, we found this to be a great bargain for video files. One thing that we did like that they upgraded was the styling. We really like the understated black look that they did. We also like they offered a lot of flexibility about dimming the front panel control. The remote is the same as ones previous to it. The other things that we liked about it were its feature set, it's capable, of course of playing DVD?s and CD?s but it's also able to play high resolution audio disks such as DVD audio and SACD as well as DivX files burnt onto DVD and CD. Around back, you'll see something that's unique to this player in that it does not have a component video output. Almost all DVD players we see have a component video output and this player only has an HDMI out. It's only for 10ADP up scaling and since it can't do that over a component output why include it in the first place? Moving on to performance, we found that the image quality from the OPPO was excellent. It performed just as well as DVD players that are almost four times as expensive. We think that that's a great way for video files, we want to squeeze a little bit more performance out of their DVD collection can spend a little bit extra and get a lot more performance than they would for say spending four times as much. And this is the OPPO DV-981HD. ^M00:01:32 [ Music ]

Oppo DV-981HD Review
The good: Excellent image quality; upscaling to 1080p over HDMI; attractive, understated black design; multichannel SACD and DVD-Audio over HDMI; DivX/Xvid support; aspect-ratio control; can be made region-free with a simple hack.
The bad: Worth it only for use with 1080p TVs with an HDMI input; no component video output.
The bottom line: Performing nearly as well as players costing four times the price, the Oppo DV-981HD is an unbeatable bargain for videophiles and enthusiasts.
