>> Jessica Dolcourt: Opera's latest data browser for Android phones blows the previous versions out of the water. I'm Jessica Dolcourt with CNET looking at Opera Mini 5 beta for Android. Like Opera for the desktop, Opera Mini's beta opens with speed dial. These are icons of favorites that can quickly launch a site. Assigning an entry is really intuitive. You just press and hold down. The new Opera Mini 5 beta also supports browser tabs. Tabs browsing is new with version 5 of Opera Mini, but it has been around before in Opera Mobile for smartphones. Opera has been focusing on smoothness, which you can get a quick glimpse of when switching among tabs. So far, the app can handle all the tabs we throw at it, but we wouldn't get overexcited since the phone's memory could start to suffer. Opera has also spruced up the interface adding rich-looking graphics in the menu. Find and page is a particular favorite that's been around in Opera Mobile but is new to Opera Mini. We also like the expanding Google search bar up top and the fact that the menu key shows and hides the URL and search bar. Although we still wish that the search bar and the address bar were combined, we're pleased with the browser's slick look. As one improvement in this space, however, Opera finally let's you add text directly into a text field. In previous versions, Opera Mini moved you to a separate screen where you had to do your typing. Now it's seamless. The password manager is another major addition, and one that you'll now see for all major desktop browsers. Most of the shortcuts that you saw in the stable version of Opera Mini are still here and so is the download manager and Opera link, the feature that let's you sync bookmarks and speed dial with your Opera desktop browsers. However, you can no longer create a custom search engine. As for video, Opera Mini isn't expected to transcode any even when it reaches the final version, but you can play video for mobile optimized sites like YouTube.com. Overall, we like what we see here, and so far the browser has run fast and smooth for us on WiFi and 3G, but the strength of your data connection or WiFi signal will, of course, affect the browser's performance. Download it by pointing the mobile browser to m.opera.com slash next. There's also a separate but almost identical version for Java and Blackberry phones that you can download from the same URL. I'm Jessica Dolcourt, and you've been looking at Opera Mini 5 beta for Android. ^M00:02:15 [ Music ]
