>> Opera. It's one of those browsers that gets a lot less credit than it should. I'm Jessica Dolcourt with CNET Download.com here to show you what's new in Opera 10. Browsing is all about speed, and Opera ups the competition in this release with some backend improvements that Opera claims will make it's browser more efficient on web apps like Gmail and Facebook. So far so good. If that's not fast enough for your slow poke internet connection though, you can also turn on Opera Turbo. Turbo is a new compression engine in Opera 10 that promises to crunch data up to 80 percent, so it can turn out content faster. Since image rendering is a common hold up, those who enter Turbo mode may find that picture resolution suffers. But which would you rather do? Wait around for content to load, or save crisp image? We'll take Turbo please, especially since the feature can toggle itself on and off depending on your connection speed. The user interface is another change in Opera 10. It's much sleeker looking, and as always is customizable. Do you see that thin bar with the tiny dots on it, just below the tabs? Check out what happens when you double click that area, or drag it down. Yep, you get thumbnail views of your open webpages. Opera has also expanded the speed dial feature. This is the grid of thumbnails that you can use to quickly load a favorite site when you open a new browser tab. Now you can create shortcuts to up to 25 sites. You can also change the background image to a picture on your hard drive, or to an image from Opera's gallery. Other new features include an inline spell checker, a resizable search field, and the Wand feature now being called the Password Manager. Opera 10 can also send rich email messages, and can make Webmail your default mail to address. It has also incorporated an automatic updater, and automatic crash reporting to tell Opera what went wrong in the event of a browser crash. Opera Unite, Opera's web sharing feature, is conspicuously missing from this release. It should roll out in version 10.10 we're told. There's a new Javascript engine that's also in the works, that hasn't yet been stitched in. Read the review on Download.com and give Opera 10 a try for yourself. It's available for Windows Mac and Linux. I'm Jessica Dolcourt. Happy browsing. ^m00:02:07 [ Music ]
