>> Hi I'm Matthew Moskovciak Senior Associate Editor at CNET.com and we're here with the Onkyo TX SR607. This is a mid range AV receiver from Onkyo and it's the first product that we've seen with Dolby's new surround format pro logic 2Z. Now the idea behind Dolby's new format is to take 2 extra speakers and put them above your regular front speakers to create a more airy soundscape. Now when we set up that configuration in our lab to be honest we really didn't hear much of a difference over a traditional surround sound method. But don't let the new Dolby format spoil you on the new Onkyo. This has 6 HDMI inputs which is more HDMI connections than we see on any other AV receiver in this price range. So if you have a lot of video devices this is gonna be a good option. If you look around back there are a lot of other video connections. You will notice that there isn't any S Video inputs. That's something we're seeing on a lot of AV receivers now and it'll really only matter if you have some older standard def components that you're looking to integrate with your receiver. The TXSR607 is also capable of up converting your analog video connections up to 108I over your HDMI output. However when we looked at those up converted analog video signals in the lab we really we're that impressed. So if that's something that's important to you if you have something like the Wii that you're really looking to up convert instead of making a separate connection you may want to look elsewhere. Now we weren't impressed with the new Dolby format but the TXSR607 did impress up in terms of regular old sound quality. In a traditional surround sound format the new Onkyo sounded great on both music and movies and even when we put it against receivers that were much more expensive we really didn't start to hear a difference until we had to sound really cranked up high. Altogether if you're looking for a mid range AV receiver you may find some competing models with better video based features such as better up conversion or a better graphical user interface but if you're just focused on HDMI connectivity [background music] and sound quality then it's gonna be tough to beat the Onkyo TXSR607 in this price range.

Onkyo TX-SR607 (silver) Review

The good: Excellent sound quality; six HDMI inputs, including a front panel input; onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding; Sirius-ready; upconverts analog video signal to 1080i; automatic speaker calibration.

The bad: Analog video upconversion is poor; no true graphical user interface; no 7.1 analog inputs; no S-Video inputs; big and boxy design; Dolby Pro Logic IIz doesn't have much audible effect.

The bottom line: If you can overlook its poor analog video conversion, the Onkyo TX-SR607 offers up a ton of HDMI connectivity and excellent sound quality for a midrange AV receiver.
