>> [Josh Goldman:] Hi, I'm CNET Senior Editor Josh Goldman here with the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000, one of the most durable pocket cameras available. Its metal body and shock-absorbing system can survive drops up to 6.6 feet, and it's crush-proof up to a weight of 220 pounds. Top of those things, it's waterproof down to 33 feet, freeze-proof down to 14 degrees fahrenheit. Even though the body scratches easily, they kind of add to the camera's tough design. The 8000 also has a decent set of shooting options, making snapshots easy, regardless of what conditions you're using it in. All the controls are easy to operate, even through thick winter gloves, and the company's unique tap interface lets you adjust some basic settings and even snap pictures just by tapping on the back, sides and top. However, its slow performance and second-rate photo quality above ISO 200 hold it back from getting a full recommendation. If a majority of what you plan to shoot is stationary, like landscapes and portraits, then the performance is less of an issue. And if you're shooting outside in good lighting, you'll be able to turn out some pleasing pictures. I'm Josh Goldman, and that's a look at the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000. ^M00:01:15 [ MUSIC ]

The good: Nice design; wide-angle lens; good feature set.
The bad: Soft photos; slow performance.
The bottom line: For going from snorkeling to rock climbing to everyday life, the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000 is a good choice, though its photos and performance can be disappointing.
